    8 is pretty flat with a few small towns. Imo I'd run up 8. I88 to 8

    You’re welcome. Yeah, I-88 to 8 in Sidney would work, too, like @Brettj3876 mentioned. It’s flatter and maybe a few minutes quicker than 12 (about 10 miles longer though, according to Google). 8 is 2 lanes from Sidney to Saquoit (almost the whole way); 12 is two lanes the entire distance. Not much difference in the two routes, although you’ll go by a couple of truck stops on I-88 (if you want to take a break) and 12 just has a few pull outs and regular gas stations.
