Nowadays with all the electronics they put in cars(especially safety systems-airbags,ABS,etc.) if the costs of replacing those systems reach a specific amount the vehicle will be totaled outright-airbags especially are expensive-$700-$1600 on average, and that’s just for the airbag itself never mind the mounting hardware and the labor cost involved.

Deployed airbags are the biggest reason for totals. Not only do the air bags have to be replaced, but all air bag sensors and the control module. You're already in the thousands before you start on the body damage.

Happens a dozen times a week in San Antonio and Austin at the downtown I-35 upper and lower deck splits. Usually but not always a jeep liberty or ford focus in a variety of colors.

I think they gave up on fixing the big yellow sand filled barrels at the impact point. It was a fulltime job that paid a ton of overtime.

DoubleO7 and God prefers Diesels Thank this.

I’ve seen new cars with only a scratch on the bumper after a minor street fender bender deploy every airbag it has. Actually saw that on a 2010 Camaro down in the Texas valley not to long after they came out. Car had no body damage. Just bumped bumpers with another car. The car it hit had the bumper fall off and its bags also deployed. That has got to be expensive to fix or not worth it to insurance and they do a total out. Throw away cars in every way. If it wasn’t for the bags deployed you could Zip tie the bumper and go home. Both had to be towed for nothing but parking lot rash. Lol!

    Well, well, well.
The barrier has 1/32" less to adequate marking required to warn motorists.
    State DOT sued.
    Motorist awarded 100,000,000.
    The Hammer.

Back in the 80s if you had a lemon or just wanted out from under it one of my dad's coworkers would "get rid of a car" if you wanted it gone. Give him the keys and it would disappear and wait for the insurance $$$ to show up Lol
