OK so I check my tires and notice a nailhead stuck in the steer tire. I got to TA and they advise it can only be replaced and not patched. Get new cheap steer tire on, look at the old tire—it was never penetrated. The nailhead never popped through the inside.
Now I got my still good old steer tire, how do I carry it? Chained to catwalk? Need ideas as I’m in TX but live in FL. Thanks.
Is a Spare tire chained to catwalk legal?

Secure it as best as you can, chain or straps (better). I’ve seen one duct taped to the catwalk before, the guy had to use a whole roll of tape.

And I have yet to find anything in the regs that prohibit using a patched tire on the steers. I know tire shops, being afraid of liability if something happened to cause and accident due to a tire they repaired, will not do it. But if you were to patch it yourself and put it back on there, you would be ok legally.
And yes, I know I will get a lot of static on this.tommymonza, GYPSY65, Dale thompson and 1 other person Thank this. -

A lot of our haul roads are granite shot-rock and we'll usually destroy a side wall before we hurt the tread.Brettj3876, Dale thompson and kemosabi49 Thank this. -
Personally, i would never run a patched steer tire or a recapped steer at highway speeds, period. Do they actually make recapped steers lol? I mean i could see using a steer casing for a drive or trailer recap, but steer?

I was considering just patching the tire myself and putting it back on the steer since it’s still fairly new. Guess I’m lucky it didn’t fully penetrate the inside of the tire, considering I’m still out $400 for a crappy steer, but will write it off as a $400 dollar lesson. Thanks again for all the replies guys.
