Like @Dockbumper said its a heat pump when it goes to defrost or heat mode it makes the inside coil the warm one (condenser) outside the cold one (evaporater) when it goes back to cool the reversing valve changes position and things go the other way, compressor runs no matter the mode or temperature setting.

A heat pump won’t work that good. They only heat into the 40’s. Even then. In the 40’s they use too much power. Waste the electric bill.
Heat pumps have to have heating elements for colder weather.

Factors include; ambient temperature, set temp, continuous or stop/start, loaded product (mass), age and condition of reefer and box.

At -10 start/stop this time of year with my new unit, 1/8 tank for two days. Same temp in an older unit in July Cali weather, same load 3/4 tank in two days.

Beer this time of year at 45 degrees, months. In summer, probably a couple weeks.

You get to know fuel economy as you pull more reefer loads.

It depends on the set temp, outside temp, whether the reefer runs continuously or is stop/start.

    Tank is 50 gallons.

I don't believe a heat pump can get the extreme cold temps required for the coldest frozen loads. I vote conventional refrigerant compressor cooling like your home freezer/fridge.
