U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers stationed at the Santa Teresa port of entry seized nearly 300-pounds of pork bologna on Wednesday.
Officers seized 30 rolls of pork bologna weighing 277 pounds just before 6:30 p.m., according to the agency.
After a U.S. citizen from Sunland Park, New Mexico, presented himself for inspection, CBP officers discovered rolls of prohibited pork bologna concealed under the mats and seats of the front and rear passenger sides of the vehicle, CBP said in a news release.
Bologna containing pork products is prohibited from entering the United States due to the possibility of the products containing foreign animal diseases.
"Our CBP Officers diligently inspect all conveyances for contraband and prohibited agriculture products thereby safeguarding the United States from foreign animal diseases," said Santa Teresa Port Director Fernando Thome. "We take pride in facilitating the legitimate travel and trade, to include protecting the nation’s agricultural industry.
The American citizen was given a $1,000 civil penalty.

I'm relieved that our border patrol saved us all by seizing a hundred pounds of cooked pork before it could enter the country!
It reminds me of the time they did the same thing by confiscating my 1 pomegranate and 1 mango that I carried in my bag from Singapore to Los Angeles. I almost endangered the entire population of the United States but those guys saved the day. They even waived the 1000 dollar fine and instead just threatened me about what might happen next time.God prefers Diesels, D.Tibbitt, Aamcotrans and 5 others Thank this. -
They probably used specially-trained bologna sniffing dogs

Do you wonder if they actually test the bologna for any foreign animal disease? I understand the concept, but blanket condemnation is a crime against the worldwide bologna community.

Apparently what they have in Mexico is the really good stuff made with pork not chicken.
"The price of a roll at least doubles once it crosses the border. “Say anywhere from $30-40.00 to say further north up to $80 for one single roll,” according to Vasquez."
