Do all ELD's show On Duty no matter what?

I think you're confusing your 14 and 70 clocks. Our Qualcomm/omnitrans don't reduce the 70 for anything other than on duty or driving. But once you start working. Your 14 will go down regardless. UNLESS you are in a split. So yeah that DOT clock will keep counting down. Look at the summary tab when you are off duty. You should see the 14 going down. But the 70 not moving.

 

Agreed with what Wasted said, your 14 will keep ticking, it'll even go into the negatives until your 10 hrs off is met then it'll reset

 

Life seems to be so much easier on paper.

 

I'm going to ignore split sleeper logging as if you don't have the basics down it's useless to get into more advanced logging. (Or 60 hour clock for that matter)

You have several clocks to pay attention to.
1. 70 hour clock. This is the amount of on duty/driving time in 8 calendar days.
2. 14 hour window. You can only drive inside this window once started for the day.
3. 11 hour driving clock. You can drive up to 11 hours inside that 14 hour window.
4. 8 hour "break" clock. Can drive a max of 8 hours before having stop for 30 minutes.
5. 10 hour clock. Required to reset the 14 and 11 clocks.
6. Optional 34 hour clock. Resets all other clocks after 34 off duty/sleeper berth.

Drive time is always the lesser of the clocks. For example, your 14 hour window.
You start your day at 6:00 am. You will not be able to drive after 8:00pm due to the 14 hour window.
Another example is the 11 hour clock. Say you start at 6:00am, do your pretrip and start rolling at 6:30. You can drive untill 2:30pm, take the 30 minute break, and continue driving until 6:00 pm before running out of drive time.

But remember that the 14 is not a clock counting down like all the other clocks. It's a window you are allowed to drive in once started for the day.

 

How are paper logs going to help him understand his clocks? All that's going to do is make it worse for him whenever he gets inspected, because it will be messed up and he doesn't know it's messed up.
