Never seen or heard of one that does without user input. So no, an ELD will not simply switch to On Duty for no reason.
Do all ELD's show On Duty no matter what?

My ELD been using a few weeks. Once logged on you have to log off when you want or otherwise it will keep you on duty. Not a issue for me as my run is only 450 miles, no stops, no drops

Mine did more than once and I think it's a common occurrence I've heard of people being sitting in the sleeper truck be off and it would go from off duty to on duty cuz it's not a remote event

What ELDs are we talking about? Some are barely functional and cheap to appeal to those who can't afford or refuse to pay for established quality.
Trucker61016 and ZVar Thank this. -

Omnitracs is not cheap, but to expect anything that is electronic not to make a mistake or break or quit working it just being naive

I'm not sure if the driver understands HOS or the equipment is bad. Sounds like a pretty good deal if you work hourly.
Bean Jr., Cattleman84 and ZVar Thank this. -
As an example say you started at 0600 and then drove until 1200. Then you took a 4 hour break to shop of get a haircut or what have you. Your clock still stops at 2000 since that is 14 hours from 0600.
Though if a plain reading of the OP is to be believed and all off duty time kills your 70 then there's something severely wrong. I wouldn't really expect that from omnitracs though so who knows.Dieselboss, Bean Jr. and Cattleman84 Thank this.
