How to get brokers to ACTUALLY PAY DETENTION?

From my understanding, the broker has a contract with the shipper. In that contract is an amount for detention so they have no problem requesting it as it means more $$ in their pocket. I have been told from a previous broker, theirs was $100 an hour after the first two hours. Then they pay (if they pay), the carrier whatever they want ($25 seems to be the norm) and book the rest as profit.
For me, I try to know where I am going, if it will be a problem I figure it into my rate. If there is detention, I will ask for it and hopefully get it. The good ones will reissue a revised rate con right away, others will not. If not, I take the whatever approach, do up an invoice internally for detention at a rate that I am worth and can be substantiated based on my daily average, then write it off as bad debt. Then, I have to decide down the road if I want to work with that broker again. As I have always told my wife, in this industry it is always the driver that gets screwed.TheLoadOut Thanks this. -
Like we only pay if customer pays and then of course supposedly they never do. -
