Desperate and need a job change to become financially stable.
Don't want to borrow anymore money. school loans are the devil. I need paid training, but honestly will take anything at this point.
No problem relocating because I'm single. Living in Harmony, NC
I contacted the local workforce office and unable to get a grant for CDL school due to qualifications.
They gave me numbers for Mcelory, Stevens, and Swift. I have a couple of issues though:
1. Mcelory
Don't know if I am cut out for flatbed. I cant lift a lot and heard that the tarps are pretty heavy.
2. Stevens
Their closest training to me is in Charlotte. Unsure of the company in general.
3. Swift
Contract is for 2 years to pay back tuition I think. don't really want to stick around after a year if I can help it. Rather get to the driving jobs I want.
4. CFI
Training is very far away, but as far as i can tell only have a one year contract
5. R. E. West
Everything looks too good to be true as far as I've seen on their site. Unsure of the catch to it and their reputation.
Thanks for any info in advance!
In a tight spot and would appreciate any help.

Swift Refrigerated starts a new class every Monday morning.
Contact a recruiter for details. I think the contract is 12 mos., but call to be sure.
This is on the website, so maybe I'm not correct about the contract:
TUITION REIMBURSEMENT
At Swift, there are no employment contracts! Best of all, if you choose to join Swift’s Driving Force, we will reimburse you for the total cost of the Swift Academy. Call our recruiters for details.

R. E. West Transportation is correct about no contract to sign. I think you're paid hourly while in classroom training.
Not sure how often classes start though. Choice of dry van or flatbed.
Jarhed1964 and slow.rider Thank this. -
@Wasted Thyme can fill you in on Stevens Transport.
Stevens Transport does urine drug test.
Swift Refrigerated and R. E. West do hair follicle.Wasted Thyme and Puns_and_Prose Thank this. -
@Chinatown Thanks for all the help and info I really appreciate it!
Jarhed1964 and Chinatown Thank this. -
Stevens is a solid starter company. They were one of my finalists, and I didn't need the training from them since I got the grant, so I was only looking for a starter company, and after a ton of research (including employee reviews) they were still in the running till the end. In fact, of my top 5 finalists, the last determining factor was distance to a terminal. That's the only reason I went with someone else: my first (and only) application went to the company with the closest terminal.

I wouldn’t get too concerned about how far away the training is - it’s less than a month and a small price to pay for a good job with the right company. Driving OTR you typically get 1 day off for every week on the road with minimums - ie. you must take at least four days off at a time - so being away from home for more than a month will be common.
I didn’t see any red flags on your list of options, but I’ll comment on a few:
Only you know what job will best match your needs. If you’re not interested in flatbedding there are plenty of other options.
If you’re talking about Stevens Transport. I trained with them. School is just the first step of many. Orientation has more driving tests and training. I heard something about driving figure 8’s in reverse! They do get reimbursed for one truck wash a month.
Unless they’ve changed it Swift deducts $100/wk from your check for 1 year to cover your training. If you stick around for a second year they pay you that money back at $100/wk. You’re only obligated to stick around for a year though.
There are plenty of reviews on this site of trucking companies READ THEM! Make an informed decision. Paid training is available. @Chinatown will probably have some more options for you.Jarhed1964, slow.rider and Puns_and_Prose Thank this. -
To be honest im probably just going to go down the list and apply and see who gets back to me.
I think the top 3 is: R. E. West, Swift Reefer, and Stevens for sure.Jarhed1964 and slow.rider Thank this. -
Thanks for the info!
Im honestly trying to do as much research as possible. I've got four tabs open as we speak. -
Jarhed1964 Thanks this.
