    Hi guys,

I've got a 2007 Western Star 4900 stinger pulling a Cottrell C-7510 trailer. It has a 'trailer 3rd axle lift' switch on the dash, anyone with experience knows what this switch is for?

I bought the truck recently and at first I thought someone had installed a wrong switch, but then I saw another 2007 Western Star for sale online that has a picture of its dash with the same switch in the exact same position. Now I think maybe Cottrell installed this switch during the truck build-out?

    Any info is appreciated, Trailer-Switch.jpg

You can spec labels when you order spare switches. If it's an electric switch, you'll probably find the end of it in a bundle inside the left frame rail at the back of the sleeper. If it's an air switch, not sure where they go. I've got an air slide switch but no slider, but I've never chased it down.

If you do not have any extra electrical cords going to trailer, It may be set up for a 4th axle lift axle for heavy haul. Or to raise the trailer 4 inches by inflating the trailer air bags to get trailer over curbs, driveways with scrapping the bottom of the trailer. Car haulers can have both raise and drop controls on the suspension system.

Thanks, mnmover. That might be it, today I see some pictures of the dash of a Peterbuilt stinger car hauler similar to my Western Star and there is a switch with label 'trailer lift'. Also there is a 3rd air line (beside the 2 brake air lines) from the truck to trailer, this 3rd air line must be the one used to raise the trailer. Could anyone with a stinger confirm this? Sorry my used truck did not come with an operator manual. Trailer-Lift.jpg

I assume on the Western Star the switch is labeled 3rd axle because the Western Star switch package accommodates the heavy haul industry that will use a lift axle/3rd axle on other style trucks. Cottrell may have hooked to that switch if the original owner ordered the over-lift option since it was a spare. My rig has the 3rd air line to the trailer for the over-lift. The dump switch (separate option) for the trailer on my rig is an air activated toggle switch mounted on the trailer hydraulics control panel.

image.jpg I specd my truck with 2 blank air switches. They have air to them but the ends are capped. I plan on using one as a dump valve for the front and the other for a truck/trailer over lift and bumper lift. It also has 2 rocker switches that aren’t being used will wire all of the extra lights to those

Does anyone know if the over-lift option raises the trailer only or both truck & trailer?

It can be either way. Some of the older rigs that I am familiar with only do the trailer.

I had a truck with a T&C headrack and they set it up with separate switches for truck and trailer
