It's different if you have an exhaust muffler... that helps. But if you're rolling down a residential street with a straight exhaust, it's flat and it's 2AM - jakes are just flat out loud. Same deal in the truckstop when everyone is trying to sleep - give folks a break and turn them off for a bit.

OTOH, going down a steep grade at 75 - 80k lbs, I use them when I need them.

"There is no where that gives you the right to infringe on others just because you choose to drive a truck."

I like the way you think Powder Joints! There's an old saying that goes something like this: "Your right to make a fist ends just before the point where your fist makes contact with my nose."

You are probably hearing 4 wheelers and trucks hit the rumble strips on the shoulder and you think it is a jake break but if you live by a hill and your hearing engine breaks then you are just hearing a safety minded driver.

Eh. Engine brakes don't have to be loud. The Volvo's at work are barely audible. The Mack's on the other hand can rattle windows.

You must be pretty old if you lived there before the Jacobs engine brake was invented. BUT here is a challenge :you try to live for a week without anything hauled by a truck then come back and whine and snivel about the very hand that feeds you.

WTF does "try to live a week without anything" have to do with anything the he mentioned! It wasn't until i bought my second truck that I had a Jake brake! That was back in 87! AND not every company truck I drove had one in it!

There are ACTUAL MORONS out there that think they have to have the thing on 24/7! If they actually drove like they had their brains engaged they would realize that they are NOT going to wear out their brakes or not slow down fast enough! If you can't get your brake pads and liners to last 500,000+ miles then you really aren't as good of a driver as you think you are! That right foot needs a little adjustment!

In towns or areas where people are SLEEPING such as TRUCK STOPS or other places (residential) or where we park flip the switch OFF! If you can't tell by the overpriced street signs that most cities, towns and counties put out that there is a STOP coming up or curve then you need to put that BRAIN back in gear! You're NOT paying attention to what you are supposed to be doing!

I love the sound of a Jake as much as the next guy but NOT when they are driving by my house on a FLAT street with a 30 MPH speed limit, or when I'm in a truck stop on FLAT ground where said driver should be driving about 10 MPH!

Jakes are only needed on hills and in areas where traffic is heavy ( where the morons DO stupid things in front of you!) They aren't needed 24/7 so get over it! But I guess in your 29 years of driving that "a truck brings it" excuse works for you! Yeah only when justified!

I couldn't have said it any better...

I particularly hate the idiots that use it to slow the motor down between gears....Learn how to shift!

No, Even if there was a law, the turbo acts as a baffle, so you could still run a straight pipe and get away with it. If one really wanted to get technical.

To your last sentence: They can, and will!! If the signs are posted, and there is a noise ordinance, they can cite you. I gained this knowledge about a year ago. I haul logs, usually grossing 95- 120,000lbs. I was hauling through Lumberport, Wv. I had this one hill to drop about 3/4 mile long. It was very steep with houses side by side all the way down and a elementary school about half way down, then a stop sign at the bottom. I would drop the hill in 2nd gear with jake on. 350 Mack, single exhoust, no modifications. About a week into the job, the signs went up, JAKE BRAKES PROHIBITED. I kept running my jake each trip in and out. People would give dirty looks, stick their fingers in their ears, and shake their heads when I went by. Guess I was the ONLY one who saw all the children playing on the sidewalks and walking to and from school.... Make a long story short, the sheriff started sitting at the bottom. Pulled me over, and asked if I seen the signs. I said yes, and tryed to explain the situation to him. He didnt cite me, but told me if he heard that jake again he would. I e-mailed an O/O lawyer, told him the story, and he told me "If the signs are posted, and there is a noise ordinance, they can cite you". You cant fight the law, even when it doesnt make sense. Sometimes I wounder what people are thinking... Cause it definatly wasnt about saftey, or their children!!!
