So I was told there’s an HOS exemption if you’re hauling agricultural products for processing.if I understand this correctly, the exemption only applies if you’re within 150 air mile radius or 172 land miles within the shipper or receiver.(Effective up until May 31st) But I was talking to another driver the other day and he basically uses the exemption even once he’s out of hours on his 70. Just running all over the place in PC mode with a notation that reads “AG exempt”. Is it legal to do that ??

Are you talking about the standard ag exemption that was part of MAP21 or are you talking about the Covid exemption that goes until the end of May?

Ahhh ok so the AG exemption isn’t COVID-19 related. As long as you’re hauling food the exemption applies until the 31st. You’re basically exempt from the HOS If the product you’re hauling is food in lieu of Covid relief. This was how it was explained to me

The standard MAP21 ag exemption is basically anything that hasn’t been processed or changed from its natural state. You get 150 mile radius from the origin of the load.

The Covid exemption that we’ve all been running on since last year also includes ingredients used to produce livestock feed, and those aren’t normally exempt under the MAP21 exemption because most have been processed in some way.

From what I heard the covid exemption is only when your hauling it then once your unload you need to start using a log book again after a 10 off and can be use again once you pick another load of exempt stuff up

. Yeah I’ve been hauling non Covid relief freight and I’m just now getting back into pulling a Reefer and on the tail end of this HOS Covid exemption deal. I wasn’t aware of it until just a few days ago.
