I think Edmonton's traffic circles date from the '50s or '60s, but many were replaced in the '80s/'90s?

Traffic circles work great when everybody knows the rules... :biggrin_25523:
(I've lost count of the number of times I've had to avoid contact)

Now we have a diverging diamond intersection in Calgary.

And heaven help us if we try to exceed to one of the many multi-lane (4+) traffic circles as is commonly found in Europe or Asia, or England's Seven Circles of Hell Magic Roundabout. :biggrin_2556: :biggrin_25521:

That diamond thingy there on 162nd is a head scratcher. The folks had a place up the hill from it, so have been over it a couple of times.
My old skull hasn't been able to absorb the advantage in it, from the ground level anyway. Really not interested in trying to figure it out. Looks like an experimental prototype project.
Sort of reminds me of the screwed up, short on off ramps and merge lanes on the Deerfoot 500.

It significantly reduces traffic conflict points, especially cross-traffic. There is no left turn signal, nor wait to either turn or for turning traffic. It actually works pretty well if you don't try and second-guess, but just follow the signs. After the first time through it makes perfect sense.

Started in Europe in the Seventies and there are a bunch in the US, but the only one I have been through is in south Cheyenne, WY, over I-25 by the Flying J and Loves. So easy even truck drivers can do it. ;)

Ugh... don't get me started. I live just a few blocks west of Deerfoot and the 32 Ave, McKnight, 64 Ave, Beddington cluster...

I find Calgary easier to navigate than Edmonton.
