The problem is not driver shortage but driver retention. The megas and the ATA lobbyists whine about the shortage but it is just lip service. It is all part of their business plan of using people as long as they last then bringing on some fresh meat.
Projected driver shortage to tripple by 2026 but companies keep closing?!

50 years ago truck drivers were well paid (average earnings about 100k in present dollars) and well organized (about 60% of all drivers were teamsters). They had clout, collectively, and the potential to bring the country to a standstill if they were trifled with. The powers that be couldn’t have that, so truck drivers had to be neutered. Low paid, unorganized truckers don’t cause trouble.

Considering now people can learn a different trade and make more money, why is there any reason to even get into the trucking industry? This industry is paying the same wages from 20 plus years ago.
