The problem is not driver shortage but driver retention. The megas and the ATA lobbyists whine about the shortage but it is just lip service. It is all part of their business plan of using people as long as they last then bringing on some fresh meat.

50 years ago truck drivers were well paid (average earnings about 100k in present dollars) and well organized (about 60% of all drivers were teamsters). They had clout, collectively, and the potential to bring the country to a standstill if they were trifled with. The powers that be couldn’t have that, so truck drivers had to be neutered. Low paid, unorganized truckers don’t cause trouble.

most unions pay the leaders millions while the union members get peanuts no different then today all union leaders electrian or plumbers are corrupt as hell dont give crap about average joe, I was under the impression jimmy hoffa screwed truckers union badly or is that not right? I know UPS is union and is a company I would rather not work for under any reason, I have been in unions before been a plumber and electrian, welder. its got pros and cons but far from perfect.

I don’t want to be in a union either, but it’s beyond argument that things were better for truck drivers, in the most important ways, when there was a strong union. Yes, UPS is union, and their drivers are probably the highest paid of any large company.

Considering now people can learn a different trade and make more money, why is there any reason to even get into the trucking industry? This industry is paying the same wages from 20 plus years ago.
