Are driving doubles/triples as terrifying as many make it?

The way i like to describe doubles to someone who has never towed them before is:

Imagine yourself walking down the street pulling a red wagon. Then image hooking ANOTHER wagon to that wagon.

The first wagon is going to follow you (the tractor) and the second wagon is going to follow the first wagon. Sort of a mini-train.

If you're really worried about it---- Hook a wagon to your bike and then hook another wagon to the first wagon. Exactly the same dynamics as the real thing.

 

21 years pulling triples for me. You get use to know when to hold em, know when to fold em. You don’t pull them if it’s unsafe.

 

Final point of advice, and this is pretty important. Know where the hell you are supposed to be going. Some states have rules on how far off the interstate you are allowed to be. In Montana it's 2 odometer miles and my coworker has been pulled over for being 1/4 of a mile over.

God help you if miss a turn/exit in an unfamiliar area and don't know your way around. Nevermind a citation, if you get lost with triples, you will quickly wish you didn't. Keep in mind, you are 115 feet long and have 5 individual articulation points. You can probably back up 20 feet before your roadtrain looks like a folded up train wreck.

I've done it before which is why I am telling you all of this.

 

I don't see a issue at all bentstrider, having come out of LTL linehaul and pulling smoothbore tankers, pneumatics, and bottle trailers for almost two years myself then going back to LTL linehaul, believe me I have a new found respect for tanker drivers, others on here may have different experiences, but honestly how often do you see a tanker driver #### up out here, in my case it's very rare, wether they are fuel, milk, bulk commodities, you just don't see it, at 8 to 9 years experience pulling smoothbores you are bringing alot of experience to the table in my opinion, it will just be a matter of learning how to hook a set, getting accustomed to how a pup trailer backs up as opposed to a longer trailer which you are used to, and just how a set behaves overall on the road, you will do fine.

 

What does being "at scale" mean in this context?

 

Top of the pay scale. Some companies it’s 1 year, some 2, some 3 and some 4 to be at the top wage the company offers.

 

If it goes to Flagstaff and back, you just hit the jackpot.
