I have worked in the boating industry for a few years now building custom molds and parts made of carbon fiber. I want to know if their might be a possible market for visual carbon rear fenders. I have done a basic google search for them but can't seem to find anything on the topic. What are your thoughts on it and could their be a dot issue?

The quarterfenders in front of the drive tires?

I have been around and played with fiberglass for a long time (That stand up jetski in my avatar is a lightweight carbon/glass hull) and I would say no.
It is just to brutal out here IMHO.
Build some sets and give them to truckers to test for you and see what happens. -
What do you mean by "visual carbon"?
In general, I would think that carbon fiber would be cost-prohibitive, especially if it hasn't been proven to withstand the force of a tire blowing out just inches away from it. -
There is no DOT regulation I'm aware of regarding their construction.
The consideration would be durability, cost, and aesthetics.
So, compared to plastic, aluminum, or fiberglass, all of which are available and mass produced, how would your carbon fiber fenders compare in the aforementioned categories?Deere hunter and Tb0n3 Thank this. -

Compared to a plastic carbon is better in every aspect other than cost. (Carbon fiber is essentially bonded with plastic)
When comparing carbon to fiberglass you could have two identical parts. One made of carbon and one made of fiberglass. The fiberglass would weigh 100lb and the carbon part would weigh 50lb.
There are also ways to mitigate damage of the inner side of the fender by using some sort of plastic sheild or coating while retaining the visual aesthetics of the carbon on the outside.
The purpose for this product would not really be used for the general truck but for those who like really custom rides and take pride in how their truck looks. I think carbon fenders or hoods could save tons of weight and also bring a more modern aesthetics to the custom trucking industry. Obviously the make or break on this product would be realistically the price. -
My reasoning for asking is because I find that a lot of trucks actually have a lot of fiberglass on them. Hoods, fenders, and even sleepers are made of fiberglass. My thought is why not bringing a superior material into the market that could make trucks lighter and stronger. Obviously the aesthetic of visual carbon would be the eye of the beholder, but it wouldn't be hard to offer a non visual carbon part too. My thought it there are plenty of people who buy a car with aluminum hoods and what not and then switch them out for carbon hoods or quarter panels. Why wouldn't a trucker do the same thing especially when they are constantly battling weight.

I love your thinking and I love carbon.....but this is a na$ty game out here.
Show trucks and wrecker trucks (always pimped to the max!) may dig it.
I mean I would dig a carbon sun visor on my 362 but just haven't made the time to make one!
Sun visors will sell I bet!Last edited: Apr 1, 2021
tommymonza Thanks this. -
Gotta say I like your train of thought here. Any idea what the price difference would be for carbon vs fiberglass?
Also, could you make custom panels, that would be able to bolt on where the OEM panels are, but have a different shape?
Being able to have a truly one of a kind truck, yeah there would be a market for that.
