Might not be practical with a big cab over type but there are plenty of lower profile and lighter pop up ones nowadays. Seems like a pretty good idea. A van is an even better idea, unless you already have the truck.

In virginia for instance, it says pilot vehicle must be a truck of not less than 1/4 ton. It also says you must have unobstructed view out of the rear window. So there, it would not work. Im sure whether a truck camper would be legal would depend on what states you are operating. I know in other states ive seen it say "standard 4 wheeled passenger vehicle" must be used. Dont know if an RV would count. But some class B rvs look just like any other passenger van from the outside. So maybe thats an option.

Sprinter with "van life" setup in it is probably the best bang for your buck

If it’s a crew cab there’s a couple ways to install a bed. With a portable generator you would have options for hvac and small appliances.

You show up to escort me with a pickup with camper I’ll send you home. No pay for a no go.
You got to be able to see .The money you would save will help with poor fuel mileage.

Saw one earlier this year in Ohio. 2 pilots from the same company one of them running a palomino pop up truck camper. Had lights mounted to the roof of the camper.

This is the correct answer. I’m paying for your eyes and ears and your head on a swivel.
