I picked up a load in Lewiston Idaho heading to SoCal. I was routed West on 12 and down to Pendleton Oregon and then over Cabbage instead of down US 95. Even Trucker Path gave me the West on 12 route when I checked. It seems like US 95 South would be a better route and about 35 miles shorter, but 2 different truck routing thingies didn't think so. Is there something I don't know about US 95 from Lewiston to Ontario Oregon?

US 95 between Grangeville, ID and Council, ID is not truck friendly. I'm newish to Idaho but my company trainer is from Northern Idaho, likes off-roading for recreation and told us "don't be tempted to take a 53 ft trailer & tractor up US 95." I think it's the curvy section south of Grangeville that is the problem. In the atlas the road has a long section that is not highlighted as STAA quality so it's going to be narrow, maybe very narrow.

Yeah its not truck route afaik. I believe you have to buy permit to have 53ft trailer on that section as well

I just checked my trucker atlas and you are exactly 100% correct. I'm the map guy (20+ years as a cartographer) and I didn't think to check the atlas. Guess I'll have to make myself a dunce cap and wear it! Well, at least I was smart enough to take the route I was given and not take US95 cause "I" thought it was a better route!

It's called Hell's Canyon. It is beautiful scenery if you have the time (and the money, it requires a 53' trailer permit). Lots of hills and curves and slow roads.

I prefer US93 over US95. But, both have beautiful scenery.

It's not that bad, been on tighter roads back east ... Requires a permit to keep your tandems forward. Swift runs paper loads down that route all the time.

It’s truck friendly, just a two lane road and you need a permit for a 53ft trailer. We always figured about a 45mph average from Lewiston to I-84 at 105k gross.
