    Hi there
I’m driving since 2 years 95% local 53ft with sleeper. 3-6 stops a day and touching freight. 50k pounds a week. im looking to change to haul petroleum local. They pay well like my job I have now. I’m just wondering. It’s hauling petroleum stressful? Is it hard to learn? Heavy lifting?
    thanks

Hi, depending on the kind of fuel hauling it can be somewhat physical but if you come from a general freight background it shouldn't be a problem. So you got station work which is usually just big hoses and gravity drops, how many loads you run depends on your location or you have wet hose work which is a small straight truck usually delivering to construction sites etc. These guys usually run alot of short stops and do most work with a pump. Like most labor work you find ways to work smarter rather then harder.
As far as learning how to haul fuel it's all about routine, routine, routine and If you have a good trainer you will notice this right away. You will need to be carded at each rack your company hauls loads out of. Some racks are more strict then others, but procedures and safety is priority one. Then you will learn the delivery side which consists of checking your at the right location, that the load will fit, that there isn't excessive water in the tank, and making sure the right product goes in the right fill. Good luck to you I've been tanking now for over seven years and have hauled it all from oil, chem, fuel, compressed gases, cryo and have loved ever bit of it over general freight!

I had an incident last month I would like to get some thoughts on.

While I was dropping fuel at a station a guy walked right up to me, stood about 5 feet away and was smoking his cigarette. I started off politely asking him to step back but he stood there rambling strange threatening things while staring me down and rapidly puffing his cigarette.

Then I picked up my phone and called 911 and reported him. While he stood there I got so angry I felt threatened enough to pick up my sledgehammer and I got in the batting position.

After a couple minutes some bystanders came by and started shouting at him to leave, then he walked away. About 10 minutes later or so, a police car drove by two times but never stopped to talk to me.

    What would you have done?

There’s a point where I’d go from worrying about getting fired to choking the guy until he was snoring. It’s hard to say exactly what that point would be until I was in the situation in real time.

Grab the fire extinguisher, and blast him with it.

I’d have shut off the product flow first and after that I’m not sure……

    That is a great idea!

But, the big extinguisher on the back truck bumper has a vinyl cover velcro-strapped closed and the metal strap-band to secure it...meaning it’ll take some time to deploy.

At Costco locations the station attendant brings a ready-to-go extinguisher and observes with it right next to the lids, so I could’ve used it if it happened there. Now I’m thinking maybe I should ready my extinguisher each drop, but laziness will prevail.

My wife said I should wear my can of bear spray while at stations.

While I really felt like bashing that guy in the head, spraying him with a fire extinguisher would’ve been no repercussions I’m sure. I’m wondering what trouble I could get into if I deployed bear spray in his face.

Also, in the stress of the situation I completely forgot about stopping the flow of product, I must remember that in the future.

I would have walked him back a safe distance and kept on. I don’t #### around when it comes to people smoking. It either goes out, or I’ll help you put it out real fast.
