Ok guys, just read the pre emission vs emission and it really didnt help.
So..... Im looking at 2 different trucks that I can get, neither of which I "really" want but its what I can get for now. Question is, which would you go with IF it was the only 2 you could choose from. I am a cat guy through and through so I need help. I really want a 00-01 Pete 379 EXHD with a 6nz-18 speed like I had last year but got rid of due to major back surgery.
1st - 2001 Pete 379 short hood 60 series (1999) 450 13 speed nothing added to it just factory, that has been completely gone over and tons of work done to it in the last year and is actually still sitting in the shop waiting on me to decide which one I want. I have attached all the invoices (redacted) for the engine and other work done to it.
2nd- 2015 T680 with a 450 ISX 15 Cummins 13 speed 570k miles. Has the Kenworth Idle management system and bunk heater installed. I dont know all the history yet on it, but will be getting more info in a few. This truck appears to be in great shape cosmetically.
I had a T680 2 years ago but with a paccar and it locked up on me and I got rid of it. Truck was great on the inside ergonomically speaking with tons of storage which I liked.
Im thinking the T680 might be the better choice for fuel efficiency and the idle management system but just not sure about all the emission crap. The Pete having all the work done recently also makes me feel warm and fuzzy on the inside.
Cant decide on pre-emission truck or emission efficient truck.

i would pick #1. stay away from emission as long as you can,
.. i used to work for Celadon, i know a bunch of OO leased from company KW and International around 2014-2015 all powered with ISX and had problems with rings/piston burns excessive oil, some got inframe under 2-300k miles.RubyEagle, slow.rider, Rideandrepair and 2 others Thank this. -
I myself would go with the older Pete. The Detroit is very economical on parts, compared to anything else. Fuel mileage should be close to 6, maybe better. You’ll miss the torque, but not the big bills when it’s time to buy a Turbo, fuel pump, and a host of other parts.

They make money..
379 & DeeTroit all the way!!Brettj3876, slow.rider, Domingo101 and 4 others Thank this. -
Looked at some gliders a few days ago and the prices are crazy , I think anyone would pick pre emissions but there are ppl having success with the modern platforms .

Another vote for the Pete

How is this even a question?
That Series 60 can be set at 550hp and run non-stop with no issues. It'll do better than 6 and if you keep your foot out of it, Id bet it'll get 7.
Working on that 379 will also be much easier than that 680. Which as an o/o is nice, because labor on repairs can get expensive quick.77fib77, slow.rider, singlescrewshaker and 1 other person Thank this. -
Another vote for the Pete!!!!!!!

Not to mention it’s hard to find a Pete or KW with a Detroit. Back then Cat was still more popular with Paccar buyers. Somewhat of a rare Truck.

The thing I find odd is says 14.0L block repair & rebuild 14.0L cylinder head.? My understanding is the 11.1, 12.7, & 14L all share the same engine block as far as external dimensions go. But the 14L has larger diameter bore, so don't think that head would work..?
Also you stated 450hp.?
1999 engine model year will be DDEC IV, & 450 wasn't an offered rating. For 12.7 360, 400, 430, 470, & 500hp as far as I know.. 450hp was the DDEC II ('89-'93) hammer..
slow.rider and Swine hauler Thank this.
