Yes it does. When you're thinking about what TO do, you experience tunnel vision. Your options are limited to what you already know.
When you're thinking about what NOT TO do, your options are pretty much limitless. You're now exploring every path except what will get you in trouble.
In my job, every stop is different in every way. Type of freight, fragility, dimensions, location and available equipment--and somehow, I have to git 'er dun. I developed two rules: No One Gets Hurt, and Nothing Gets Broke. If those two rules are followed, no matter how it got done, I call it a win.
When am I no longer considered a new driver?

Well, it’s different for everyone, but for me, I knew I was no longer a new driver when I walked into the Love’s fuel desk and Big Maud said “Now there’s a manly trucker. I like a pale, cape wearing, elongated k9 toothy type. I’m gonna take you out to dinner and then a movie! You ain’t gotta problem with that do ya?”.
Big Maud took me to the local Waffle House. It was a high class joint. The waitress had almost a full complement of teeth and hardly ever said ain’t. You get to watch ‘em cook your meal and the manager was friendly and asked if I was feeling alright because I “looked a little pale”.
Big Maud said “It ain’t gonna be waffles OR pancakes baby. It’s gonna be both! And, she wasn’t kidding! She ate both!
Then, the way she looked at me when she told me to go pay the bill... talk about dreamy! Then we got to the movie house. She had me go get a large, butter popcorn, a box of Mike and Ike’s and some Bon Bons, and a large Diet Coke. Then my new sweetheart told me to go back and get whatever I wanted!
That’s pretty much it. Me and Big Maud have been an item for awhile now. She did make me break up with the two carnies (Skeeter and Cricket) I was seeing, but she ain’t got a problem with me catching Kentuckians and sucking them blood dry.
Yeah, I know, I shouldn’t brag. But, when it comes to Big Maud...Last edited: Apr 8, 2021
