Inop rates?

I would charge depending on how much extra work is involved. How much was the fee before ? It may be something not worth the effort.

 

I rarely take inops that need to be winched but I would quote transport cost + $75 an hour minimum.
If its a fork on/off without needing an appointment, just transport costs.

When I get told "run and drive" I let customer know that the agreed price is for a run and drive unit and if it ends up not being able to start or drive I charge an extra $150 inop fee. If I get told they have a forklift and they end up lying and not having a forklift I add $100 and they have to have at least 3 guys available to help unload the vehicle because my trailer is mostly flat and the extensions would stop a rolling car. Also not responsible for any damages to an inop car being rolled off while they would be responsible for any damages to my trailer unloading this way. Most end up not giving me the job, a few have called back an hour later trying to negotiate. Don't negotiate.

If I have a choice between 2 units, one runs and lets say pays $750 and the inop pays $1000 for the same miles I'll often choose the running unit. I have been delayed many times to the point of it not being worth the extra $250. You will spend time strapping down a inop, securing broken pieces that might fly off and a line at drop off that will delay you over an hour.

 

Fork on and drag or drive off is only inop's I'll do.. The issue is as a hotshot you aren't a wrecker and you probably can't get the trailer where the car is sitting 9 out of 10 times. Meaning you will need help getting the car to the trailer almost always so it turns into a big PITA.. also brokers will often lie about the situation just to get you there in hopes you'll figure it out..

Also just a tip.. Copart will call any car that the engine starts as operable..It can be missing a wheel or two but they'll claim it's operable.. You can usually still drive them off the trailer even missing wheels but sometimes it gets interesting and the customers never have fork lifts to take them off.. Maybe at a port but I've never had a customer that had a forklift and could unload it that way.

Someone stole and wrecked my subaru, had a tilt deck wrecker come out winch it onto his deck then back to my flatbed and use his winch on a snatch block to pull it onto my flatbed. Reverse of that back at my house and just had him tilt it to about 35 and it came off in my yard at home (had car as courtesy car for me and another driver at a yard 300 miles from my house)

Obviously if it were a torched wreck or missing tires it wouldnt have gone as smoothly, one of the steer axles was buried under the engine

I assume that to be your definition of inop. I got the job done obviously at lower cost, but what should someone do if they needed that service? Just call a flatbed ltl? Or go with a car hauler?
