I'm hoping he was stopped and preparing to roll when he responded. I frequently check this forum while in line for fuel.

Well. The DEF issue popped up again, but I have been monitoring the truck more closely.

In a nutshell, the truck never performs an automatic regen any longer.

    Several possibilities here..

First, the sensor that should be detecting the need for an auto regen has failed.

Second, wiring between the sensor and the truck computer has failed.

Third, the truck DEF software is corrupt.

Fourth, the electronics that control the DEF system are failing or damaged.

Once I finish this trip, truck's going in the shop to have this issue addressed.

i was driving a kw t680 and when i used the engine brake the def system alarm went off and said to stop the engine immediately!!

These def trucks blow. I’m guessing its becuz i maxed out the engine brake? When i turn the eng brake off the alarm goes off

Odd. I am pretty sure that fuel is supposed to stop going to the cylinders that are being used by the jakes. If the fuel is not completely stopped, then you would be feeding fuel into the exhaust directly, and it would likely be mixing with hot exhaust from other cylinders, combustion, and freaking out the DPF sensors. If it only happens at max jake, and not lower jake settings, then a mechanic might be able to say what cylinder the fuel is bypassing.

That's some guesswork there. I'm no diesel mechanic.

Regens are done to keep the DPF from getting plugged up. DEF isn't causing your regen problems. Trucks have had DPF systems before DEF was even a thing.

i googled it and its a sensor problem on the reservoir. A low coolant light came on when on a hill and then a dpf warning light comes on a second later. A tech looking at it tomorrow. But it sounds like a faulty sensor.

Sorry. Not a mechanic, and I consider the DEF system to be part of the DPF system. If that makes what I say confusing, I apologize.

Find a way to read the codes before taking it to the dealer. There are so many resources that can help save you money or point you in the right direction with a diagnosis. This could be something as simple as cleaning the 7th injector. At the very least, you will be able to tell if it's a voltage or erratic data issue, or if it's even related to the DEF system at all.
