The ‘lift pump’ is part of the high pressure rail system?

Yes I can see that, did not see that scenario. Thank you for getting me up to speed.

It’s on the back of the high pressure pump and is nonserviceable.

That's what I thought, and on a BC Cummins, return fuel goes right to the tank, and metal, if any, should be picked up by the filter. Perhaps these new fuel systems are different, but in all the BC motors, including my own, I don't ever recall metal of any kind, and I'd always dump the old filter out, to see how much crud and water was in there, but never any metal.

Deere hunter and Don379 Thank this.

What if you drain the tank and it’s clean with no metal? I’m working on one of these now.

This is why there should also be a filter before the injection pump. If metal is in there then you know it is coming straight from tanks. Either someone put them in there or flaking from tank or came from a defective fuel island pump.

If the pump fails on the high pressure side, it will send metal to the tank through the return fuel, so metal in tanks could be a sign of high pressure pump failure.
