upwards of $73000. I must have missed something. is this numbers accurate for todays market? I mean its fitted with a Thermo King c600, not even a s600 or a s700.

I also called Great Dane and that guy was telling me a new reefer will run around low 80's.
Since when did reefers cost as much as a power unit?

New trailers are ridiculously high right now, and a long ways out if nobody has what you want on the lot. Hoppers are into next year for new orders as of a month ago. I ordered a Manac stepdeck a week ago and they're out to mid September on that.

Yup, trailers in all fields are nuts atm. There is a huge shortage of parts and labor. When i was looking for an end dump best quote i got was 100k for a 40 foot split axle end dump with delivery in may.....of next year and this was back in january. From what i hear some drivers are bing quoted at 120k+ for that style of trailer if its not on the lot. Even well maintained old trailers and/or salvaged trailers have spiked. And getting a lease on anything in decent shape for a good price wont happen right now.

Talked to a lot of guys who pulled their old beat up trailers out of the boneyards or storage because they cant get parts for their newer ones. Even used parts are drying up right now.

My boss mentioned to me last week he traded in a group of utility/ great Dane reefers to mid states utility and they had them sold before they received them.

Stoughton reefers are sold out thru October, Dane and Wabash are sold out thru the end of the year. Used prices have spiked too. I priced out a 2016 last November at a dealer asking $36k, but for the same spec 2016 from the same fleet, they're now asking $48k.

I did manage to find a fleet that sells it's used equipment direct, and hasn't spiked it's asking prices - at least, not yet. In fact they don't even seem interested in doing so. They just keep selling everything within 24 hours of it coming in - and seem perfectly happy to, despite having some clue of how hot the market is. After all, they're buying new to replace what they're selling, although those new buys could well be at rates contracted some time ago. So i got a 2016 7500x4 with 6700 hours, maintenance records from day 1, three rows recessed etracks, 16 placard holders, and brand new Michelins on new aluminum rims for $37k with 90 day warranty.

On the other hand, freight rates are elevated enough that if you do end up paying extra for your equipment due to hot market conditions, there's a decent chance that you'll fairly quickly recoup the loss via higher rates - unless you're already locked into a contract, of course. Personally I'd rather get a bad deal on good equipment than a good deal on bad equipment.

Maybe all the trucks and trailers smashed to bits this winter is finally having a effect somewhere. I’ve been noticing a few companies running other companies old trailers lately. (Glue from stickers still visible) let’s hope it discourages the investor types who drive down rates.

Yeah there is quite a bit of fleets which normally buy new, now buying used because they want it now, while rates are still hot, rather than having to wait a year for delivery of a new. In addition to the unusual winter, inventories were already near historic lows due to covid, so now all the businesses that are opening back up are needing to replenish stock on hand. Could be a real good spring and summer.
