Chill out. Many here put more miles in reverse than you have in “D”.

We started driving when you used pay phone (cell phone didn’t exist)

you used an Atlas (gps was for military not civilians)

there was no such thing as an Automatic restriction.

even today, i don’t have a gps in my truck. I buy them, they break, i get tired of wasting money. A new laminated atlas every three years is cheaper & easier.

Even with a gps, i still call my customers for local directions. I don’t trust a gps that much.

Yes sir, I fully agree. That's why I'd ask here in a pinch for directions. Can't hurt. Even the shipper and receiver themselves can't "see" from a trucker's point of view.

Nobody said it was a blessing. You’re the one acting like it’s a miracle that somehow loads got delivered before gps and cell phones. Believe it or not, they used to have these things at truck stops called pay phones. And we would, get this, put money into them to call shippers and receivers. It was so wild how we could actually communicate with land lines back before cell phones.

And you’re still missing the point. All most of the replies are saying is to use every tool, phone calls included, to plan your route. Don’t just punch an address into a gps and hope for the best. But you’re so hung up on people getting around without gps you fail to comprehend that part of the discussion.

GPS will lead you astray or on a route that is not always the best.
For giggles when in an area I know well, I will take a road I like better than it recommends. Then listen to it try and recalculate. Amazing how it can adjust though.
I really do like the map app on my smarter than me phone. It works as well as the GPS and can be packed in the shirt pocket. On a stop just take out the notepad and write down all the street names and turns. Off you go.
Sure don't miss those pay phones and punching in all those charge card numbers to get a call made.

I wouldn't be ashamed to ask for route guidance in unfamiliar territory and am happy to offer it in areas I'm familiar with.

Some people ask because they DO look at a map and see viable truck routes. But it may be in the NE and they just want feedback on those back roads. Sometimes they’re worth it, sometimes not

Same here. I am happy to help with locals when i can.

as far as city to city on unfamiliar routes...well isn’t that what trucking is all about? It’s an adventure, seeing new things, new places, experiencing things most never will.

As long as my atlas showed a Staa route & there were no low clearances or restricted routes on the route i’ll go like the dickens. That’s how i learned my way around this Great Country.

i guess us old guys check our atlas, then look in the front of atlas for additional info, while the newer generation checks their gps, then verifies it online.

Every truck restricted route I had to stay off of in the NE isn't even in the atlas. Same with the million weak bridges. Nothing in there about them either. If you take the atlas at it's word, then the entire NE should be a cakewalk for a semi truck.

I dunno Bub, i ran the North East for over a decade without any issues before i bought my first gps. Like i said earlier i don’t have a gps in my truck right now, use my atlas daily.

the fear of North East is worth another thread....man some of y’all seem to be scared ####less of it. I just don’t get it. I mean sure when i got my CDL North Jersey & NYC scared the crap out of me, by the end of my 1st year not so much. I never had a fear of upstate NY, CT,RI,MA, etc...
