JMO but I don't think I would try that because the plates won't match the VIN# on the truck .. and Iam not sure about using the plates that are on the truck your buying since its registerd in the the former owner... but again this is just my opinion... I kinda have the same issue your facing.. I can't .. (don't want to) register the truck untill I get it home .. and its gona be a1100 mile bobtail trip.. I have a trailer I could pickup on the way home & even put a load on but I'am not sure its cost effective for me to do so

I would B/T home, with the signed Title, and bill of sale, on a weekend. Hope the scales are closed. Maybe even take a scenic route, looking for a good restaurant. Buy a permit, if needed. I wouldn’t be surprised if you can do everything online. First Title, then IRP. Be worth a phone call to find out. So many DMVs are closed now, or appointment only, like here. Business still goes on.

You get the Bill of sale and in some cases a title to transfer, insurance and go
don’t use plates that are registered to another truck.Rideandrepair, baha and AlexD13 Thank this. -
OOIDA will sell you a Insurance. policy to move the truck till you get home and get it leased on or put under your nun. and add it to your Insurance policy, your Insurance.co. can sell you the same policy

Insurance is the main thing. We just bought a Jeep, she drove it 1400 miles home. No plate, but I had insurance put on it. Same with Truck, when I bought it, along with a Trailer. Had a 30 day temp plate from a Georgia Chrysler Dealer, Lol. Trailer had old Owners plate. I actually did haul a couple loads, bouncing home. Mainly out of financial necessity at the time. But I did have insurance. One O/O at a Truckstop, spotted it, asked about my paper plate, said he was on the phone with his wife, told her I must think I’m in the 80s with my name duct taped on the tanks. Lol. The right way to do it all, like I did when buying my first Trailer, is to just make 2 trips. Pick it up all legal, with a new plate, then haul a load home. Current Trailer, just dragged it home on the weekend, to avoid making 2 trips. I put my old plate on it, just to avoid any red flags. But really should have just ran it w/o a plate. At least get the insurance, just in case. That’s the main thing.
