I'm a young guy who will have about 4 months off from college soon. I have no where I need to be and I'd like to get away from home. I have no problem driving across the country and not seeing home for a while. I also have no problems going to the states either. I have a passport. I'm thinking trucking might be a good way to do this. I have an Ontario G class license but nothing else.

How can I get into a truck and drive for the next 4 months? What training should I get and how should I get it? What should I know?

First off, it’d be helpful if you could let us know the general area of Ontario you’re in?

Since you’ve only got a G licence, you’re limited for commercial long haul opportunities. I wouldn’t bother upgrading for just a Summer job.

What you could do with that license is look into RV Transport jobs. (Picking up brand new tent trailers from the manufacturer and delivering them). It’s cross border work.

Another suggestion is moving companies. Driving their lighter duty straight trucks. -These jobs usually involve physical labour. Ex: loading and unload the truck, so keep that in mind.

Oh boy, let you tell ya what you wanna do is grow a thick beard, get some flip flops, and move and marry into an East-Indian family. At which point you can get sponsored by the Canuckistan goberment for a LMA or whatever it is sponsorship from the forgotten world into modern communist slavery.

Personally, I'm considering a move to Guatemala so I can join the caravan and get smuggled in through Mexico to get a USA residency upon illegal entry.

Not sure in Canada, but what about apply to a wrecker service. In the states you can run alot of medium duty trucks on regular license. You will work hard, see alot, and learn alot.

I very much appreciate your answer. RV transport seems like it could be the perfect gig.

    Also I'm in the GTA.

Maybe a courier service, or some other type of business that uses pickups, vans or modified chassis (e.g., box truck, mobile wash truck, etc.). As suggested, a moving company could be possible, but you're going to be labour and not a lot of driving. A towing company might be possible, but I suspect only driving a support vehicle for clean up, flag person, etc. No reputable company is going to put you in any kind of tow truck (at least not to start) and since Ontario is a MELT province, getting a D or A licence is out of the question (time and money and while it appears you can do some tow truck driving with a G, if it were my company you wouldn't). Go on Kijiji and Indeed and look for driving jobs, if that's what you really want to do.

If it were me, I would look for construction, road builders, etc., especially working up north. That will take you out of the GTA and you'll make much better money than driving in the GTA.
