They no longer maintain them well. 50,000 mile pm may be ok for the oil, but they are not lubing the chassis properly.

Fuel mpg savings( what little there may be) will be gone the first time that auto gives you a hassle. Get a good reliable tow company in your phone directory.

cheapest and dirtiest freightliner you can find. must be missing a mud flap and have at least 1 full roll of duck tape on fender

Running local doing this type of work, does fuel mileage even come in to play?

I have no idea but would think that MPG wouldn’t be a factor with this scenario

Get an older freightliner and drive the 10 speed.

Good luck with using an automatic. They cost a lot to repair. So do manuals. Manuals are 3 to 4k for a rebuild and 1500 in labor. Automatics idk. Then you have to find someone who knows what they are doing.

That’s the job I’d be looking to train for , rebuilding the automatic transmissions.

lot less stress than driving and home every night ,
    More money too I bet.
I dunno how you’re gonna make money running railroad containers in Atlanta,
I did for a while but it’s a tough job . Lot of work , lot of sitting , and not much pay. only way It worked for me was my old truck was paid for, and I could do the minor repairs and had a good local independent mechanic.

you need to figure out how to learn to drive a manual and get the automatic restriction off the DL, although the concrete truck we had deliver five yards yesterday was an automatic, noticed that when I was talking to the driver.

When I ran containers in Atlanta I had a 1989 cabover international with the set back steer axle and air ride drives.
that was an ideal setup for containers.
cheap truck, and very maneuverable making lots of stops every day.

    To the OP,

Getting an appointment with the DMV will be a HELL OF A LOT less hassle than maintaining one of those POS autos.

You get one of those junk heaps, you better have a butt load of repair cash stashed away.

    For sure.
Between the auto trans and the emission system. It’s going to be an expensive to maintain rig .
Id just skip that and be talking to yellow roadway about line haul or local driving.
You’ll make a lot more money gettin GM paid by the hour to do local and line haul than dragging containers from the railroad.
