Grease in trailer axle bearings instead of gear oil?

Inside looked fine, was my oldest tire and should have been rotated out last week. At initial look no obvious reason it was flat and yeah, I knock 'em pretty often so I know it was good at least midway through the day.


Yeah I miss so much about a semi but won't go back till I have the funds to get my own and funds to keep me running. Was nice just pulling over and calling dispatch when I had a flat. Now it's rain, snow, both or 117° in phoenix and I'm out there doing it myself. The joys of having your own authority.

 

I checked hubs and lug nuts at 50, 110 and 200+/- mile intervals and no obvious difference in temps. Either way it's time to repack anyhow before summer. I tend to run quite a bit in phoenix over the summer whether I want to or not, figure it's better to have fresh grease when the temps are 110°+ regularly. Gotta get me an IR gun too when I get back. Someone mentioned earlier, that'd be handy. As for someone mentioned leaky seals, that was why I switched to grease, I will say permatex on outer surface of seal made a huge difference, couple seals lasted more than a year with no leaks but you never know when it's going to happen, like when there inspector pulls you in the Bay and says oh, you got a leaky seal that wasn't there when you last fueled

 

Any time I need a semi-fluid grease, I go with John Deere corn head grease. I tend to think it’s the best semi-fluid grease on the market, JD uses it in their combine header gearboxes. Can be found at any JD dealer.
