Maintenance plays a big role in wether it will be a good engine or not.

I do know the older ones have cam flaking issues, carbon packing around the rings and VGT turbo issues and egg problems. Haven’t owned one since the signature 600 came out back in mid to late nineties early 2000’s

The X15 is much better engine. It came out a year or so later then the one your looking at. Most of the issues were worked out by that late in the ISX life cycle but it won’t be as efficient as the X series. If you can afford it, then look a little newer.

I have not been very impressed with my 2013 isx 450 .
It lived to 684k with good maintenance and carbon packing took out the liners .
Complete inframe done in 2019 with new cam and last month at 228k I had the overhead done and the cam had a bad lobe on # 4 , of course Cummins said were real sorry blaa blah.
So 5700.00 later it has an updated cam and rollers , also have to add this engine is deleted and never sees sooty oil anymore .
Initially Cummins tried to blame my fleets oil supplier as they have had 6 other cam failures on x15s but this was proven wrong and Cummins has admitted they are still having cam issues .
I'm on my last truck for my career but if I wasn't I'd look at other power options.

I have a 2008 Cummins ISX CM871 in my truck and it's been an OKAY engine. Currently in the shop at Cummins where I live getting an complete in-frame. I had 1 cam flaking a tiny amount I COULD have re-used but decided I'd go ahead and get it replaced. I'm replacing all my rollers, jake components, and new liners and pistons. My head is good, thank God, that sucker was 4600.00 alone! I'm also keeping my injectors because there was nothing wrong with those. I only got 654,000 miles out of this engine since last rebuild. I've had cats, detroits and cummins. My all time favorite engine was my old N-14 red top 565 HP. I drove that thing for ever!!
I probably have another engine or 2 in my future before I retire so I might as well get the most out of this truck before I let someone else have a whirl. My problem is I can't replace the tractor for anything near what I paid for it. I'm not about to spend 300k on a brand new 150 inch sleeper truck, no thank you!

    Happy trucking ladies and gentlemen!
