Sliding new frame rails in a truck? Cost of replacement?

I never had a problem with it... One truck has a tank bed on it and pulls a tanker pup, been nearly 8 years since I stretched that one.

The one that i stretched 10 feet now has a 24' flatbed on it and carries a piggy back forklift for handleing pallets, it can also pull a pup... That one has been about 5 years I think.

There are a few others but those are the ones that take the most abuse, and haul the most weight.

 

Over the years I've heard 40 hours labor. But I'm guessing that's on a relatively new rust free truck. A friend claimed he got a quote for 15 grand for new frame rails out the door on a 15 year Pete. I told him the truck would be in the shop that afternoon if it was mine. And I'm a cheap bugger. Lol l talked to a guy on here a few years ago. He re railed a Pete dump truck with rails from pg adams it was close to that and the rails weren't drilled. He would have had to send them his old rails so they could copy them and it would be around 3 weeks a rail. He said his mechanic was still mad at him after he paid the bill! Good luck with the project. Btw l got a frame insert made up from A36 at a local shop a few years back and it's still fine. The bigger issue you will have is that the original outer frame won't have the exact correct corner radius because the rust will spread the flanges slightly. So when you get the insert bent be sure to allow for that.

 

It has always been pricey. Usually between $100 to $200 a foot in the past.

There was a shop in Houston that bent, drilled, cut, welded new and used frame rails years ago. They were right by the Houston ship channel. They were kept busy by the oilfield and pipeline companies. They did some long stretch jobs and heavy haul stuff. I’ve seen a few of the old trucks that pop up here and there around the area from time to time that were fabed at that shop.
The owner has been gone and the shop closed for around 25 years now.
Legend has it they stretched some custom trucks for Aramco and BP back in the 70’s that were brought in by ship because at the time no one in Europe could do it.

An old friend of the family had his ‘68 White-Western star rerailed and all new Rockwells on Pete Air Trac for $5000 in 1985 money by them.

 

Don’t know how your going to replace a double frame with a single? Nothing will line up unless you use double thickness single frame because now you frame rails will be like 3/4 narrower?
