Yes it can work but there are more scamming companies out there want to pay on a 1099 than legit ones.
I have seen people say no to taking a 1099 job

If your asking the question, I can guarantee those throwing out numbers are going right over your head.
As a not yet employed truck driver are you in the position to hire an accountant and a lawyer to review your (most likely verbal contract) given to you by a 1099 employer? Bull**** if you say yes!
To cut to brass tax - most 1099 employers are looking at cutting corners in some way. At the top of that list is cutting out paying Worker's Compensation, Unemployment, and worker's health insurance expense in any form.
So bottom line.
Employer screws up - you get hurt - screw you!
You screw up - you get hurt - tough luck!
Job ends, truck quits, customer folds, you piss off boss - jokes on you- no unemployment.
Add to the fact, if the 'employer' stiffs you on his promises, and they often do, don't go complaining to the labor relation board; you are not an employee. You have to hire a lawyer and take him to court. Good luck on that.jamespmack, bryan21384, Speed_Drums and 1 other person Thank this. -
Long story short, if you want the benefits of being an employee, go w-2. But if you want the benefits of running your own business, then you're looking at 1099 type stuff.

If you are a 1099 victim , what happens if you run someone over and its a fatal.
Whos insurance covers the event , does the Volvo mafia put it all on the driver (contractor) who has no liability insurance, pretty shady.jamespmack Thanks this. -
Don't forget cargo insurance and truck insurance as an expense too as a 1099 op. If leased through a company, they will most likely collect the fees for it, permits, etc. But I think the life of leased 1099 drivers will be out the window in the next few years thanks to the new ABC rules.

Don't forget the escrow most will require and that few will return

Another bad part of 1099 work is that none of it goes towards your retirement with the government/social security.
In other words, an individual must work a certain number of years and put into social security a certain amount of money over those years in order to qualify at some point for receiving benefits either at retirement age or upon injury preventing work.
You can register on the SSA website and see if you currently qualify for social security benefits and at what age you can retire with what percentage and monthly income.
A 1099 position will count for nothing towards the tally that the SSA keeps to determine your benefits and retirement.
Unless the 1099 is paying extremely well and you can afford to take some of that money and squirrel it away and not touch it, ever, then it's not worth it except for very short term, stop gap work that you can't avoid and even then, there are risks involved that others mentioned, in terms of getting hurt and not covered or scammed out of money.jamespmack and NavigatorWife Thank this.
