Husband was fired from his truck job because he has cancer

If the individual had the diagnosis mentioned in the OP, for numerous reasons he is no longer qualified to operate a CMV. Specifically he can no longer pass the physical, likely. Even if he could pass they physical, if the company continued to use him as a driver and he was involved in any serious accident, the employer is going to get sued with the plaintiffs citing the serious illness affecting his ability to drive and make safety related judgements, medications affecting him etc, if not outright disqualifying him.
Therefore, his employer no longer has any reason to keep him on the payroll. It stinks. He can probably maintain cobra health insurance for 6 months at the employer rates, then needs to explore all of the disability benefits (SSI etc) available to him. If he recovers, he can get his CDL reinstated and see if the same company will rehire him, which they should do.

Really? Got a co worker that just had to leave as he couldn't renew his medical card (he has bad glaucoma). We are a Teamsters shop.
What could the company do to keep the driver employed?

Depending on how long he worked, FMLA may apply but then ssi should be applied for asap either through a lawyer or through insurance or provider assistance.

 

We got a lawyer for my husband's disability (stroke), got a lump sum of late payments going back to his firing (2 years) along with his now monthly checks. Same lawyer is working on his VA disability wich pays only a small percentage right now. Look for a specialized lawyer.
