I've always wondered, what are the regulations for putting your unit number or truck number on the truck? I see them on the trucks all the time, but I can't seem to find anything about it -- Atleast federal.

Is this a state thing, similar to putting your vin on there?

Basically you need to Identify your vehicle so it matches the registration. If there are 2 names on side, the one responsible for the insurance must be identified by a Operated By tag so in case of an accident, the people can see who is responsible for the Insurance. The VIN numbers on the side of the cab is usually only needed on the right side as Colorado tracks the mileage rate by the vehicle. It usually is not required, it just makes going through a Colorado Port of Entry easier as they can simply record the vin number instead of calling the driver inside to see the paperwork. Now Iowa used to give out tickets if the words leased to were near the name of the one responsible for insurance. It should be Operated BY.

Lettering height should be a minimum of 2" tall, which is the absolute minimum for the dot numbers to be visible from 50 feet away. Screenshot_20210427-143605.png

Hmm.. So this may just be a carrier requirement? Obviously company owned trucks should have truck number stickers on the truck to identify them that way.

But I figured, there might be a reg, as I've seen several owner-op companies print the unit number sticker / truck number sticker for the trucks to use.

I appreciate the assistance as well!
