Driving a Truck vs Mowing Grass.....

Yrc can have you do linehaul which is running from one terminal to another or switch point with another driver and back to the term...generally home every day depending on lane you run but at most 1 or 2nights a week overnight...p&d is the local pickup & del drivers...you can have odd hours depending on customers but home daily guaranteed and i think yrc in houston is shut down either whole weekend or parts of it...

 

Are you saying most truck drivers are too dumb to build their own company and thats why some make so little?

 

My first job was mowing for a lawn care company in Florida when I was 15. I’d probably look into trucking if I were in the lawn care industry today, especially in Texas. Eventually being exposed to the heat every year is going to catch up to you.

I graduated from San Jac’s trucking school in December and have been dealing with some family issues, but also looking for a job. I’ve had a few interviews this past week for local jobs and have a 2nd interview scheduled with Dr. Pepper on Monday.

I’d decided to go the dedicated Walmart route with Schneider but I’m still trying to weigh whether or not it’s worth it to be away from home and sleeping for two weeks in a truck for a stated 1,300 miles a week.

There ARE a pretty good amount of places around Houston that are hiring drivers with no experience. Hell, Greyhound is advertising for bus drivers offering $22-25/hr..

With a new baby, there’s no way I’d be looking to spend days or weeks on the road or have totally unpredictable hours.


Probably the best paying local driving job would be gasoline tanker.

several people have stated that are earning near $100k before taxes doing that. But again, every trucking job will expect you to work 16 hours a day 6 and 7 days a week.

If you’re earning $40k AFTER taxes that’s the same as $60k before , except you have no benefits .

If you mowed lawns 16 hours a day 6 days a week how much would you earn?
Cause that’s what you’re going to be doing if you start driving, even locally.

What’s also hurting your mowing income is that you have unlimited competition since there is no barrier to entry.

You may be able to get a contract at a military base or some place that requires background checks , and that will eliminate 80% of your competition. So the price will be noticeably higher .

Many variables in the money truckers make

You are currently in a business that you can duplicate yourself
What I mean is you can grow it with more help

Just remember, a builder that makes $$$$ never swings a hammer
You can’t do it all but if you start to add other guys to mow then eventually you will be the guy in the F250 with ac on checking on them and bidding more work

 

Dumb=they don’t know how. If someone is dumb, he can learn. Stupid has the intelligence, but doesn’t use it to his benefit. You can’t fix Stupid, but Dumb can be taught.

OP has work ethic. That’s missing in the majority of the wannabe posts. That will take him much farther than normal.

Too many prefer to sit at home waiting for stimulus money than work.

 

Yes, you can make good money driving a truck. I started driving in 2009 and I've never made less than $50k. Local companies are becoming less concerned about OTR experience too. When I started everyone wanted 2 years OTR. Now some only require 6 months experience. There are jobs everywhere too.

Therefore you have some who can make $$$$ and have a life and others who can’t make McDonald’s pay

I personally wouldn’t take any job locally that was 40-50 hours per week for less than $100k but that’s because I know what my numbers are driving and I could hit that working PT

Not everyone can do it and not everyone should, that’s why many company drivers are told step by step how to drive and where to stop etc

No matter what you decide. Or anyone reading this, if you’re going to get up and put your underwear on then make the day count
