That's because they actually have time to stop. Slow trucks don't.

On the same load and same set.of hours, A truck that can run 75 across Nebraska has way more time to stop than a truck that can only run 64.

It's not a chest beating thing, math and facts don't lie.

That is an instance where you can gain almost 90 minutes of time per day by having a faster truck.

 

Wrong again.. because I timed it across Nebraska with a truck that would do 75mph and then did 65 coming back and the difference sure wasn’t anywhere near 90min difference...that is a myth

 

Just keep driving that slow truck and telling yourself how good you think you have it.

 

Ok, time the same 11 hour run across Nebraska and Iowa with 2 trucks speced the same and weighing the same. One truck is cut off at 64 (what I originally said), the other at 75.

And let's say they both have a relatively light load, 20000 pounds so the hills won't slow either truck down too much.

Let's be realistic and say both trucks run 10.5 hours. The 64 mph truck can maybe average 61 MPH all day at best.


Let's be even more mean to the 75MPH truck and give it a 69 MPH average speed.



Let's be optimistic, and say neither truck runs into bad weather or bad traffic or has any mechanical breakdowns. Both trucks take the required rest break and average meal and potty breaks and a fuel stop.

75MPH truck, averaging 69 MPH for 10.5 hours goes 724.5 miles.

64MPH truck, averaging 61 MPH, goes 640.5 miles.

That's 84 miles a day the faster truck can gain, which is nearly an hour and a half of extra driving per day in a slower truck. 11 full hours would get me the 90 minutes I stated earlier.

Yeah, you will burn a lot more fuel in that 75 MPH truck. But it could also be the difference in getting a load picked up or delivered vs having to wait til the following day. Time can be more costly than fuel in many instances.

 

Do the math: it’s roughly 450 miles from Omaha to Pine Bluffs, Wyoming. Theoretically, if you can average 75 mph the entire way, it’s 6 hours. Averaging 65 it’s almost 7 hours. Then apply a little bit of common sense. No one averages their top speed, and both drivers will pretty much go at the same speed in all of the places where traffic and conditions keep the speed below 65. So the time difference between the two trucks is going to be considerably less than an hour. More like 30-45 minutes.

Real world information: Google Maps says that right now it’s 6 hours and 26 minutes, accounting for speed limits and conditions. Looks like there are two slowdowns along the way (construction?).
