Adding Gear oil will make a foaming mess out of the oil you are calling break/in oil, don't do it, a pint can of break in oil for gas oil will help some but its not needed because of the rollers that ride on the cam don't need anything to get them broken in.

Of the hundreds of engines I've rebuild over the years I have just used 15w-40 dino oil and hook up a loaded trailer and work it for 2-3 hours and your done. At the dealership we had a short deck trailer with concrete blocks on it to use.

Cummins said they are installing the cylinder packs and lower end and will start getting the top end started next week. I'm getting tired of being home and ready to hit the road and stretch out!
I don't have much choice on the break in since I live in a remote area. I'll have to go pick up my trailer and run the truck to get my nearest load, likely to be Rapid City SD, Casper, WY or Denver. By then it will probably be broken in enough to run.

Thanks guys for the input. It's always exciting to rebuild an engine. This is the 6th truck I've owned and only my 2nd rebuild in the last 2 decades. I've had really good luck with engines since I started.

    The trucks I've owned:
2006 KW W900 70 inch Aerodyne Sleeper Cummins ISX 13 speed
    1999 Pete 379 63 inch sleeper Cat 3406E 18 speed
    1999 Pete 379 63 inch sleeper Detroit 60 series 13 speed
1999 KW T660 110 inch sleeper Cummins N14 Red Top 565 HP Super 10 speed
    1999 KW T600 132 inch sleeper Cummins N14 Red Top 565 HP 13 speed
2008 KW T660 150 inch sleeper Cummins ISX CM871 13 speed Eaton Fuller (current truck in avatar)

This is my 4th Cummins engine and not sure what my next one might be. I miss the reliability of my CAT 3406E model but fuel mileage was horrible. The N14's were awesome but I can't go to CA with those and I have a lot of customers out there I haul for regularly.

I haven't tried the newer Detroit DD15's yet but I'll ###### if I EVER drive a Freightliner!.....Sorry but I'm a Paccar girl 100%. Needless to say Volvo's probably aren't in my future either...LOL. I MIGHT take a look at a Western Star with a DD15 but I drive big bunk sleeper trucks and WS are generally heavy to begin with without a 144 to 156 inch sleeper. Whatever I wind up with next, it's still just a truck!! They all haul things from one place to another!

    Be safe, be careful.

Good morning. My truck is FINALLY getting finished today or tomorrow, time to get back on the road and put back some of the money I'm spending!

Any flat bedders out there: Where can I find good quality tarps when I'm out on the road? Tri City Canvas Granite City, IL used to be one of the better places, they still around? I haven't been out east in a while. Where's some other places I can check?

Thank you to everyone who offered me advice about my overhaul. I've only had to overhaul 2 engines in the last 20 years and I know things change when it comes to materials and things like that.

Take care, be safe and see you down the road.

Thanks Vampire. Got my truck back on Friday and put it right to work. Picked up a load in Medicine Bow WY Sat morning and broke in the engine. I'm currently in CA delivering this morning then have a govt load to Maryland.
Wound up paying a little over 28K for an in-frame rebuild. Not horrible considering Cummins provides a nation-wide parts and labor warranty coast to coast.
Thank goodness rates are AWESOME, I'm going to work for a straight month and get this rebuild paid for, then I can relax.

    Be safe,

    Sophia

Well I'm back after running a solid month. After CA I went to MD, PA then back to UT. Ran a load to UT, WA, CA and over to ND before I headed to the house.
The truck did great, not a drop of anything was added or leaked. Revenue was awesome....not that I get to keep any of it, I'm still putting back the 28K I used to OH my engine.

    Be safe.
