We had one in silver with red stripes. Had an Offy dual plane with a 4bbl, big cam and headers. AMC refused to warranty the rear end after #3. So it got a Dana. Dad surprised a lot of supposedly fast cars with that little beast.
My aunt drove it 45 miles with the oil light on, on her way to pick up her Vega dad had been working on. He was not amused.

Gotta have a bigger bulge in the side for clearance right?
I would think that puts more weight in the housing too.Rideandrepair and Hammer166 Thank this. -
Remember back in the late 70’s-mid eighties when the engineers were putting 2.25, 2.56, and if you bought a “muscle car” you got a 3.08 in the rears for gas mileage? 200 hp smogged 302’s with weak overdrive 4 speed auto trans and 305’s with metric 3 speed th250’s with no overdrive. I think even most standard spec pickup’s were like that. Sad days!
Now they are back using 3.55’s or higher and 6,8,or 10speeds with a couple or three od top gears.
Car engineers finally thinking like the old school truck builders and the truck builders thinking like the disco era car builders. Upside down imo.Ruthless, Rideandrepair, Bean Jr. and 2 others Thank this. -
The best BSFC numbers from a diesel occur somewhere on the lower end of the plateau of torque Peak. And they're trying to push the RPM down to lower frictional losses.
Gasoline engines in automobiles use a much smaller percentage of their total power for cruising. They are also much more efficient with larger throttle openings to reduce intake manifold vacuum. So they operate well below torque Peak in order to allow for those larger throttle openings. By going to more gears with more overdrives, they can keep their final drive ratios low to maintain acceleration while still keeping the very low Cruise RPM.Ruthless, Tug Toy, Rideandrepair and 2 others Thank this.
