Do you have to file 2290 right after buying semi truck

    Do you have to file 2290 right after buying my semi from North Dakota or can i get Interstate apportioned plates first along with the IFTA stickers? Im based out of Illinois. I have not applied for an EIN yet as they are not open until monday at 7am for EIN applications and I did not know I needed to have one to file my HUT 2290. Says I need my HUT 2290 filed in my name/and or corp name and is required if I have owned the vehicle for more than 60 days so I would assume this means I can get plates first as this is my first semi purchase and transaction wont be completed for a few more days? The loan/transaction for truck should be completed on monday/tuesday if that matters. Also when I complete the loan transaction is the dealer required to provide signed title front and back? Because it says here on IRP Registration Requirements that I need to provide proof of ownership "The following are accepted if less than 6 months old: Copy of front & back of signed over title & ST556 (if purchased from an IL dealer) which does not apply to me. I got the loan through separate financing not through the dealer.

    Yes you need to pay 2290 and they will prorate amount.

    Usually need an original copy of paid 2290, (with “water” stain, to prove it’s an original, if 2290’s paid online), to get an IRP plate. Also proof of insurance, from the Company you’re Leased to, and a copy of your Lease agreement. First thing is a Title, with your name, Lein holders also named, doesn’t matter. If Illinois holds Title, you’ll have to get a copy, I’m guessing. You’ll need the date it was transferred into your name, to figure tax owed. You don’t have to pay the whole $550. It runs from July 1st to June 30th. Annually, Due before Aug 1st. I believe. A call to your IRP office would be best. They’ll tell you exactly what’s needed. You only have to pay for months Truck first was ran. So if it’s been in the driveway for 2 months, you don’t pay for that.

    different strokes in different states. Often having a copy of the previous person's 2290 will get your plates. NJ goes one better you can register your initial with out the 2290 BUT it is only good for 11 months.You then need to present the copy of new 2290 to renew for the next 12 months. You get cheated out of 1/12th of your initial registration cost but do not need to chase the last one [or pay an extra $550] the first time around.

    Thanks for the reply guys. Am I allowed to drive the truck home from North dakota before doing all of this or does it have to sit there? or does dealer usually provide a temp tag? sorry I am new to the O/O game dont know much about the process

    I bought two locally, and drove one out to Georgia for a friend.

    We simply peeled off any old DOT numbers, truck numbers etc - and secured insurance.

    In my opinion it’s your personal vehicle that you just bought, it’s not hauling anything, and you’re going to use it to haul your boat or camper.

    Some states will issue a ‘hunters permit’ for a tag.

    Dealer should be able to give you a temp.

    Some states will issue an IRP temp with states listed suitable for hauling freight while others [like NJ] give out a hunters permit, the Idea was any Lease Operator running on company registration can have 30 days to hunt for another carrier who supplies plates and also used for unladen transport of newly purchased vehicles...

    Should be stripped of the former owner's DOT number by the dealer. You want nothing that suggests it is an 'in service' vehicle.

    Chem Leaman we painted over the door signs [covered almost the entire door] and the unit number(s) with fresh royal blue...as the 'college kid' on a Saturday before the trades were to be picked up by Mack, I sat in the center tractor in three rows as the shift leader, with each of the shop's air hoses and spray gun painted over everything...hooked to this truck's glad hand and my drafted foot [throttle lock NG] held the throttle to the floor giving him all the air the tired old puppy could give...People were already lining up to get our first Maxidyne trades at 3 yrs old....1972

    As per the IRS guidelines, "If you place an additional taxable truck registered in your name on the road during any month other than July, you are liable for the Heavy Highway Vehicle Use Tax (Form 2290), prorated for the months during which it was in service. You must file Form 2290 for these trucks by the last day of the month following the month the vehicle was first used on public highways."
    Also, the following info may be helpful.

    1) You can apply new EIN online at IRS website
    2) The IRS takes about 10-12 days to activate the new EIN (you will get a new EIN within 5-10 minutes but only can use it to open a bank account and so)
    3) You can e-file your Form 2290 at Form2290.com
    4) You can inform them that your EIN is new - they will auto-resubmit your Form 2290 till the new EIN gets activated into the IRS system.
    5) Meanwhile you can show proof of purchase to the DMV or the IRP to prove that the vehicle is new, and they will issue a temporary tag or license plates and so

    Thank you for this because that's the way I feel too! the question remains still...even though we are using it as our personal vehicle bobtailing....do we still pull thru the state scales when they are open?

    No - you’re not hauling commercially. Only thing they’d pester you for would be IFTA /fuel - I think Oklahoma maybe NM.

    Hell, just go around the scales.
