No, I went home every day. I don't spend my life in a truck sleeper any more.

So, you drove your personal vehicle 45,000 miles a year (based on 50 work weeks and 2 weeks vacation) just to have the privilege of working for Fedex? That would be torture for me...if you worked 6 days a week then 1.5-2 hrs to work(depending on traffic)...drive a mini-truck(daycab) around for 8-12 hrs (if you were P&D)...then another 1.5-2 hours to home. Shove a quick dinner down, hit the shower...kiss the kids goodnight. Get some rest the do it all again tomorrow. Sorry... to me, that sounds like one of the 7 rings of Hell. But if that's the type of trucking you prefer, more power to ya.

At least he goes home and has a life instead of riding around in something for two months that smells like feet and farts inside. Everyone that has done this for any length of time finds their own nitch. Not being a slave to another mega.

    SSB,

I was inspired by your post and I thought that I would actually put pen to paper to see what my figures would be. Here's what I came up with. Keep in mind that I normally only work Monday-Friday. I based this on 52 weeks (1 year) which = 260 regular days of work. I get paid 8 hours just for showing up. I normally work 6-11 hours a day. Of course, anything over 8 hours is overtime. My start time is whenever I want. I usually show up between 0230-0300. And yes, I drive a day cab pulling a tanker.

    52 weeks = 260 days
    5 weeks of vacation = 25 days
    12 sick days = 12 days
    13 holidays = 13 days

That leaves a total of 210 days worked. 210 days X 106 miles = 22,260 miles driven in my pickup for a year. However, I must admit that I do like to work on holidays as it pays 2.5 times my hourly wage on those days. So lets change the days worked to 223. That equates to 23,638 my driven in my pickup.

And if for some reason there is work to be done over the weekend, depending on what's going on at home, I just might work a day. Saturday pays time and a half and Sunday pays double time.

I agree with you that this actually might be on of the "7 rings of hell". It's not for everyone. But I bet it would for most of the drivers on this board as well as others who are not here. However, it definitely works for me!

That's the good thing about trucking, there are a lot of different possibilities for schedules, freight, equipment. I have always said that to people who dislike OTR or think their way is better than my way...and for them, it just might be...but for me, OTR is what I like. I would have a hard time getting anything done at home with just a few hours off after work and part of a weekend. The reason OTR works for me is it allows me to make enough money while I am out to take a longer time off period and get bigger projects done in one hometime. Plus, when I am home 5-7 days, that's 5-7 24 hour days with my family...not a couple hours here and a couple hours there. I wouldn't be able to relax on a get home daily job, or even a get home on the weekend gig...I would feel rushed to accomplish too much instead of taking a day just to chill, knowing that I have enough time left to get stuff done AND spend time with the family.

The battery replacement has made a huge....wait a HUGE difference in my idle time. I was consistently averaging in the 31-32% range...this week's scorecard, 20% with a fair amount of overnight a/c time (when it worked right) even with me fighting the occasional comfort mode glitch and rigging it to run all night w/o shutting off, it was still way better.
