I need help deciding on a new company

Stay away from the Russian 1099ers. May was where I got my start. Pretty laid back, OK miles. My only gripe was with some passive aggressive games some of the people in the service department would play when you send in a problem on the qualcomm. Like one time I got a reefer alarm, I sent it in, and the only reply was "antifreeze might be low."

Thing is, they don't have us carrying antifreeze and nobody ever taught us how to climb onto the roof of the trailer to check it or top it off, and I certainly wasn't going to climb up there to try to figure it out while I'm sitting on the side of the highway in Wyoming at night in a 50mph wind that's delilering a -20 windchill. So you have to figure out the least offensive snarky reply because your messages to maintenance go to a whole bunch of other people too.

But the trick is, their messages to you also get seen by a bunch of other people. So after a little while I figured out that the best reply to that crap was something like "unfortunately I wasn't trained to handle that. Will sit here awaiting further instruction," and then they'd snap out of their ridiculous stupor and start doing their job quickly before anyone noticed. But like I said, it was only some of them. Some were good.

Miles are ok, everyone you meet outside of maintenance is friendly and informative, equipment is fairly new, and they didn't mess with my paychecks. Should be an OK place to get eight months in, then if you can make it, a whole lot of doors will start opening up for you one you get your first full year of experience under your belt.

 

If you want to stay local and make good money, look into food service or ltl. You will probably have to do a refresher course, due to having less than 1 year in. Many companies paying $30/hr in that area.

 

There is a driver on these forums @Wasted Thyme whom has been having a very good time with Stevens. If I were starting out again I would have gone there.

 

With all the payraises going on I'd look for a flatbed company like Melton, TMC, Maverick, or one of the smaller flatbed companies in your area.

 

After doing a ton of research, Stevens was also on my list of finalists for a starter company. The only reason I picked May over the others was May had the closest terminal.

 

If I could have. I would have gone food service in the first place. It’s a good job that pays very well. Also the exercise. It will do you good. The lack of exercise OTR is a problem. It’s not good for you.
Otherwise. There are several good companies you haven’t mentioned for beginning. Wilson Logistics, MO. Prime, MO. Magnum, ND. Crete, NE.
In food service. You have several choices. Sysco is one I’d look into. Not that I have anything bad to say about US Foods.
It sounds like you’re in Chicago area. I remember several top carriers advertising on the rest areas. JB Hunt. Old Dominion. Others.
I’d still go food service if I were you.

There are a lot of screwballs working for trucking companies. Looks like you’ve seen bad enough.

 

Where is your location? Which state and nearest town/city?
Of those you listed, US Foods probably pays the best because it's food service.

If your in their hiring area I would give magnum Ltd a call. The trucks are equipped for driver comfort on the road and you will make decent money there. They will probably start you at 42 cpm but in a year you’ll be at 49 cpm plus up to 8.5 cpm in monthly bonuses that are reasonably easy to obtain. My monthly bonus was usually 700-900 bucks.
