Hey all, I don’t have a CDL yet. I want to drive solo OTR with my small dog. I’m trying to figure out which company to drive with based on how close its terminal is to my house. This stuff is new to me. I’m in the Bay Area and it looks like XPO has a terminal(?) in Oakland. Looking at satellite images, lots of trailers. I do see a handful of tractors (no idea if they’re parked overnight for days) and I see many cars. My questions are:
1. Where do I park my truck when I go home? Are drop yards strictly for trailers or can I leave the tractor there, too?
2. Do you guys drive your cars to the terminal and leave them for weeks/months? This would solve everything! lol
If I can’t leave my truck near my home or my car at the terminal, then I should start looking for companies with terminals a short cab ride from airports. There are a few companies near the Ontario Airport that would work.
3. If I’m going with a company near Ontario and assuming I cannot leave my car there, after all the training and I’m ready to go solo, how do I get my dog? Ask to be sent to the Bay Area?
Thanks everyone for your feedback. Fingers crossed on (2)

You'll be able to leave the car at the terminal. If you have a place to park close to the house a lot companies will let you bring the truck home. Maybe ask around some local garages and see what they would charge for just parking a handful of times a month.

Oh man, that’s a relief! I know I can’t park nearby but if I can leave my car at the terminal, things are looking much better! Thanks Brett

This is an issue that almost exclusively belongs to owner operators. I've only worked for one carrier that parking the truck at their yard and driving my car home wasn't always practical. Somebody else owns the truck? They've got a place to park it.

Most people can't afford a parking spot for their CAR in the Bay area. I can't imagine a place to park a truck near your house. Are you willing to commute from Ontario, CA to San Francisco on a regular basis??

Check with a Swift Recruiter. They have a terminal in Lathrop. Ignore the crap you see on the internet and elsewhere. I went to school with them and spent almost 2 years there. @Moosetek13 has been with them for over 10 years. A good solid place to start your career. Much closer to home than Ontario.

Yeah, I'd go with Swift Refrigerated then.NavigatorWife and BearDown Thank this. -
