Looking to get into trucking

Spoke to a guy on the job site about that rate yesterday and he told me he knows of owner-operators working for $35/hr.

Union jobs may pay well but in the prairies union truck driving jobs are scarce. YRC is one and I think Penner may be as well

 

My company isn’t union and I do over 100k.

 

There’s actually quite a few unionized trucking companies across the West. Teamsters 362.com has a list of several of the ones they’re associated with.

Another thing to point out, some trucking companies only have certain divisions of them that are unionized, not the entire company. Trimac, Vedder, Arrow, Canada Cartage and Tri-Line are all like that. Hit and miss.

 

I thought union trucking jobs were where it’s at until I got firsthand experience with it, and I wouldn’t do it again. Nor would I suggest anyone seek out a company based on that criteria alone.

The BS and politics that come with a union setting is what drove me out. I wasn’t about to stick it out at a place I didn’t enjoy just because they had a pension.

There’s other ways to invest for retirement that don’t require you to put in years and years in at a place you don’t want to be.

 

Majority of established unions are plagued with corruption.
Many are in alliance with the employers, undeserving the workers.
Nowadays you're probably better off without one.

 

Things are pretty good with a union at Martin Brower in Brampton. We definitely would not be better off without one.

 

Teamster locals must obviously differ in quality of service from one to another.

The one I was involved with was a fairly pathetic disaster. Collective agreement written by a philosopher, full of gray areas open to interpretation. Nothing was properly defined within it. The most horrifying piece of legal documentation I've ever read. Also did nothing to address safety issues in the workplace, unresolved grievances, etc. Useless Local 31.

 

We switched from Teamsters years ago to the CAW which is now part of Unifor.
