I ETS the end of the month from the US Military and am heavily leaning toward the CDL route and I hope I can find some answers to a few questions I have:

    1. Beyond the state income tax aspect are any states better or worse for OTR drivers as far as pay, # of miles, etc. Only asking about things specific to the JOB. I am a resident of Nevada but have not actually lived in the state for many years so I am open to anywhere in the US if it has advantages vs other states. So far the only real factor I see is the tax advantage so any of them are currently my favorites.

    2. State of residence vs home location for company. Is it fairly common for trucking companies to let you declare one state as your home state but then assign another state for your home time if requested.

    3. What is the preferred order of converting a regular license into a CDL, meaning my current license is in Nevada but say I decided I wanted to go to truck driving school or work for a company in other state should i get the CDL in Nevada or change my license to the other state first and then get the CDL.

    4. Length of CDL school. Many trucking schools offer a 140 hour program and a few of them offer over 300 hours of training. Is the longer school worth the time, does the longer training (i.e. hours driving) help move you up the pay scale faster.

    1. If you move to Kentucky, that would officially make you a Kentuckian. That would be GREAT!!!

    2. They don’t care where you want to do your home time as long as they have routes that go there. They’re not going to get you to California if they don’t go west of the Mississippi, for example.

    3. Go to either a trucking company that has their own school or go to a CDL school, or a local community college that offers a class. That’s about the only options.

    4. Go to the shortest, cheapest accredited route you can go. Trucking companies don’t give two squats where it come from and you’re not going to learn anymore than enough to pass the CDL. The trucking company that hires you will train you how to do the job.

You can have a Nevada cdl and work for any company in the USA that hires from Nevada.
Most companies don't care where you take home time as long as it's near the company hiring area.
Many companies hire in 48 states, so with those you can take home time anywhere.
Nevada, Texas, Florida, South Dakota are all good states to live in and all are "no state income tax" states.
I'm from Tennessee and have lived in Florida, Texas and now Nevada. I don't think any of them are better than Nevada.

Being a military veteran, many companies will go so far as to bend a few rules, just to hire you.
For example, maybe a company requires a certain amount of experience, but may waive that for a veteran.

Some people say there's better pay easy of the Mississipi. But then again, there's tons of freight stacked up in California, and recent legal changes have tightened up the job market out there too.
