Does anyone still enjoy being a trucker?

Love Truckin. Been in since 19. 20 years now. Did my best to learn the tricks, develop my own, teach others and just have fun with it. Ya, anyone would aim for the next power pole or cliff, rather than go for that last 489 kms, but I ask anyone who’s 101% enjoyed their job and never had a bad minute, to thumbs up.
Tried the states, couldn’t handle the regulations, State law differences, and general sight of large cities.. Just stayed up here in Canada/NWT/Yukon. Never really could say I hated it. Many employers I did tho. And I never stuck around long. Why(?). It’s MY license, MY skills, MY choice. Have a wife and 11 yo kiddo. They come along often. 2-3 weeks easy. Always finding new places to park instead of the usual piss stink’n, trash ridden, over crowded truck stops. I love the winters. The chaos that ensues the big blizzards, the challenge of getting to destination, mayhem
Beware tho, for all the things you may find enjoyable n fun, there just as many buzz kills. Thieves, arrogant old farts, potential health issues, accidents, bad companies, the list goes on.
Will probably die in my W9, but not before I get that last one road explored

 

Trucking isn’t too bad. I’ve managed to make a better living at it than anything else I’ve done. That being said, some of the companies I hear about are such pathetically low pay I don’t know why anyone would do it.

I really think the guys that get lucky like I did and find a good gig starting out end up liking it, and the guys that have a rough start with little pay end up getting disillusioned with it.

I own my second truck now and run local and still don’t know if I like it or not. I have to run stupidly crazy long hours. The thing about local with no Elog is you feel like you run around the clock to make it work.

 

I am a computer programmer, but I cannot find a job at ALL, because I can assure you that there are at least 10 times more computer programmers in this world than truck drivers. You truckers at least have a JOB. And what about me, talking to the four walls and being ignored by employers without money to pay bills. Now, tell me, what do you prefer, your trucking job or my jobless profession?

 

Looks like you still have enough to pay for internet service.

 

A job that pays pretty ####ty for most. If your unemployed, go get retrained.

 

Sometimes it's the resume, you may want to run it through a pro to validate. Often people list too much on there, making them seem "overqualified". On the resume you just want enough to get attention, and not enough to encourage second-guessing. Keep it tight and simple, yet to the point. I've learnt this early on and never had issues with employment, luckily.

I wish you well, there's opportunity out there in the computer sciences, you may also have to relocate.

 

Do I still enjoy being a truck driver ? No ! Absolutely not and wouldn't recommend it to an ememie .
Why ? You may ask ? ...because the average driver that has come into this business in the last 10 to 15 years has no pride or sence or professionalism ...they don't give a dam and are only here for a paycheck ...they are hooray for me and to hell with everyone else .
This group has most of us old school people to the point of can't wait to exit the business.
Just paid off my truck and got 4 more years to go until retirement...can't wait!!

 

Seriously curious why you think that is? How is it that the old-school dudes had enough man juice in them to not only remain professional but also courteous and level-headed out on the road. Was this something that was taught in school? Or just ingrained through your family? Because we need to get back to that. We need to bring back those ole' time customs and mannerisms that made life easy for everyone around. I wasn't around those days, but my grandparents were and they taught me proper. My mom and dad both boomers, idiots!

 

20 years ago it was the 4 wheelers I couldn't take my eyes off of ...now it's the truck drivers ! ...I know what the 4 wheeler will do.

I have some ideas as to why but if I expanded on it I would get in trouble with the mods .
Anyone that travels I 40 in cal az nm knows what I mean .
