I’m looking to buy a truck and I’ve come along a couple freightliner automatic swift trucks. They are in really good condition. Being that they really don’t have a good reputation. I was wondering if any of you would buy one.

Swift is good at keeping up the maintenance, at least in my experience with them.
And they don't keep the trucks much longer than 4 years, so it can't be that old either.slow.rider Thanks this. -
TransAm trucks are loaded with driver comfort features including ThermoKing APU.
Their used trucks have average 500,000 miles.
Kenworth T-680 trucks.

It's likely a governed automatic, so there's only so much damage a driver can do in those regards. Main factors would be how much idling did it do? and was there major structural damage that has been halfheartedly repaired?
Look for maintenance records, which Swift should have if you can get the truck number or VIN. Other red flags might be spotted via an online VIN search. For example, if a driver flips a truck, you might find several citations all on the same day for wierd little stuff like improper parking on the side of a highway, parking on a highway without deployed safety devices, etc. And of course other telltale signs can often be spotted by trained mechanics. A couple hours labor is a small price to pay to a veteran wrencher for a careful going-over.
If I were to buy my first truck over again, I'd have done more to ensure that the inspection was done by someone with several years of experience, and I'd also have immediately dropped $12k on baking the DPF filters and adding an APU.Last edited: May 19, 2021
Chinatown Thanks this. -
I would look for a truck that has had an APU since day one. Excessive idle time is really rough on these new emissions trucks. A couple of years ago I was issued a brand new 2019 Cascadia with the Opti-Idle system. It worked flawlessly and kept the truck heated and cooled as advertised. But......It was forever requiring a parked Regen to keep the DPF Filter clean. Good luck

If you're in TX Stevens transport takes really good care of their trucks. All start with an APU.

I wouldn't touch an ex fleet truck with a 10 foot pole.
