Basically two ways the company does the taxes.
W-2 means the company takes out your taxes on every paycheck......end of the
year you may get a little back.
1099 means the company takes nothing out......end of the year you have to pay taxes
for the whole year.
1099 you get a larger paycheck......but you will pay the full rate for social security.
Social security is approximately 15%.....under W-2 the company takes out half from your
paycheck but they pay the other half.
Also if the company is paying 1099 they don't usually offer benefits either. No Health Insurance,
no vacation pay..........so you get a bigger paycheck but that is all you get.
The standard line companies put out is that they pay enough extra under 1099
so the driver can afford to pay for taxes, insurance, etc on his own. I have never
found that to be true. I always lost in a huge way under the 1099 system. Well
established companies pretty much all pay W-2.......when a company advertises
1099 it is a huge red flag. It is true that some companies that pay 1099 are good
companies...................but a lot more are fly-by-night here-today-gone-tomorrow
companies.

There's not a chance in hell 50 percent of
Crete drivers are making 96,000 a year.
You can't honestly believe that.
The average pay for a driver is around 45,000 a year. That's facts.
That means everybody from rookies to 30 year veterans.
That means 90 percent of us make between
40 and 60 grand a year.
dont believe any trucker who tells you what
They make. Tell them to show you 6 months
Of pay stubs. Then watch them disappear. -
No, I don't need to show you 6 months of paystubs either, don't care if you believe it or not. Your mentality is indicative of a limited mindset, on display in these forums everyday. "No way they can be making that because the industry avg statistic that I wholeheartedlly believe says so". What about the O/O's making bank right now, grossing over $12k a week? "No way, that's pure b.s"!
This is why everyone one here except a few give the standard lame advice to the newbies.." start at a slave wage, soul crushing mega, pay your dues (a year at minimum)..and then graduate to the good life. Maybe then you'll make 50k dragging a reefer at a less mediocre mega and your life is all set.
I would never step foot in one of these horror show megas, even to pay my dues. Thank God for thinking outside the box.
There are alternatives, I started in foodservice, making 75k my first year. Do not follow the herd, do your own research, lest you wake up one day and realize you've been trading your life for mediocre pay that you accepted blindly.Badmon, CorsairFanboy, kylefitzy and 1 other person Thank this. -
Just did a quick search and found this
Many many experienced drivers earn that and more.
Don't work for cheap -
-
I would say if you want to work - you can make more than 2500 per week as a driver ( yes 1099) , if you plan collecting rumors and whining around - you'd be glad to make $1500 . To each their own , some people want easier life and happy with 1500-1700-1800 etc , others are eager to make money and pushing their limits further and further .
Coffey Thanks this. -
