I drive a simple run that takes from Ontario to Michigan and back again all in the same day. I'm new to border crossing and was wondering about how to declare small purchases to customs when I return back to Canada. If I buy something small, say a coffee tumbler, do I just declare this to the customs officer when I return? Will they then charge me the applicable tax at the booth?

It is up to the border agent
If it is worth $20 or $15 he will likely tell you to have a nice day. Otherwise you have to park and go inside to pay hot1. Hardly worth their time.

Yes, declare it.* They have ZERO sense of humour about finding undeclared stuff. As noted above, for small stuff they often times can't be bothered, but don't assume that they're lax or that the same CBSA agent that let you go 15 times before won't decide to make you pay for some similar small purchase.

*I ALWAYS declared stuff... unless it didn't exist. ;)

Declare everything. There is a 25.00 limit for 24 hr trips. I buy lots of stuff in the states and don’t mind paying. Most times they don’t bother. Only thing I don’t declare is food or drink bought and consumed. Been crossing for 21 years.

They've upped the limits since last time you looked.

They still allow 25 bucks for 24 hrs. They don’t care about a mug or pack of smokes.

Didn't even know declaring purchases was a thing. If that's the case I owe thousands in taxes to CBSA lol. I only ever declared duty free alcohol. It's not like they are going to search your truck or something. Atleast I haven't in the last two years.

Do you have to declare repairs made in the USA?

Yes. In fact, that is one of the main things they are going to look for on O/Os. So, if your tires still have stickers showing and manufacturing nubs or your new engine parts are still shiny and new and burning off the coating, you would probably do best to declare them. However...

If you happen to lose* your receipt, warranty documents for that engine rebuild, etc., and there is no other obvious visual proof, then you're likely okay.

*By lose I mean my friend means if they happen to find their way into the mail before you leave the US, or they happen to find their way into the shredder in your truck after getting scanned.

Yep. Most companies that cross the border have an authorization letter from cbsa and report repairs on a quarterly B3.

Pretty well any time I've had something to declare I've been told "ok thanks for telling me, have a nice day". Other wise ive paid hst/gst which I get back at the end of the quarter if it's truck related
