I had the privilege of parking next to this fella tonight. I’ll make sure I don’t make any noise.

One day, when I grow up...

Looks like he needs some of that “applied polish”.

I got a free Beacon truck wash coupon in my pocket. That will happen after I get the new oil tank installed on the trailer. Warranty work.

I was initially a bit wary of this deal. The first load popped up by chance, and I hooked the agent kid up with a LS friend that was able to help him out.

He was very thankful, remembered my help.
Kid is on salary/wage works for an agency, but has great character.

So, I’m working on a quote for SLC to Oak Ridge, TN - SDE, wide, long, full tarp. They want $12,600 all in - I quote at $18k. Customer has a carrier that does it for 12, but can’t get to it.

The kid calls, I think about it, SLC is dithering - so I say “Get off the pot” - and sign up. It commits me for the weekend (Fri- Sun), and come Monday, I decided to dive in for the week.

The dichotomy of Landstar is you get to work when you want, but some tasks require some form of commitment, verbal, but as a man that is binding (for me at least). So if I’m half way through a commitment and I’m not satisfied, well tough titty, fulfil and exit.

It’s power only. 6 mpg loaded and 9mpg bobtail. 80,000 lbs loaded. Customer trailer. Almost 24/7 load and drop. Good equipment.

Con - confusing logistical decisions, long unload times. Hazmat. Heavy. Running light on fuel. I prefer to be busy when away from home, not idle.

Pros - daily rate of $700 TTT, and $2.50 ALL miles, including bobtail back to HOME , not just origin. $2.50 LS is $1.85 TTT for me.

    Sounds terrible, right?

Here is how it worked out.

    Fri - Sun - 10 days.

2 days off at home, 2 days off away from home.
6 days working, including 2 full days bobtail home.

$13,025 TTT, 3,220 miles. $4.04/mile all miles TTT.

48% loaded, 52% bobtail. $1,300/day all days, or $1,628/day all days away from home.

Only worked out this way because the load point was close to home, there’s another short term project next week, and I’m open to it, but pressing for higher daily rates. Might sound greedy, maybe it is. Still unsure of what’s being left on the table.

@RStewart got dragged into the deal too.

It’s paying 74% on my regular deal / supposed to be 70% for folks without trailers as POWR/TOWY.

Yeah, thanks for dragging me into the deal. With friends like you, who needs dispatchers. Lol. It's been an interesting week for sure. I don't think I've ever done anything so strange, so weird, but yet so lucrative. Momma didn't raise a complete fool, I'll take their money. I'm curious to see what comes up with the project next week. I might bring my fishing pole next time and take him up on the offer to stay down south for a week.

I've read the entire thread, mainly out of curiosity about landstar . To @blairandgretchen : It was very well laid out and informative. Thanks to you and everyone else for all of the input. I'm currently a company team driver with my wife but sincerely, my hats off to you guys that haul specialized. It looks really complex from my point of view.
